Sib. 7.1.3: Loss of bar numbers
Posted by John White - 22 Feb 10:37AM
Some how my bar numbers, which I had for each bar of the music I'm copying out, disappeared. All my efforts the get them back so far have been fruitless. I'm wondering if something that fell down on my computer keyboard may have pressed some combination of keys which removed the bar numbers. In any case, could someone please suggest a remedy?
Cheers,
John

Presumably the score has a broken repeat structure, so that bar numbers do not show because playback would never reach that point. If you want further advice, please attach the Sibelius .sib score file.

I've just noticed that the bar numbers up to the end of repeat bar line have now come back twofold, but none are shown beyond that line. It might interest you to know that, having completed my Sibelius transcription sometime back, somehow it got badly corrupted, all but the first 20 or 30 bars. Hence, I've had to delete a large part of the score and am slowly restoring the score. I'm sure bar numbers were showing well beyond the end of repeat bar line until quite recently as they were throughout the original corrupted score.
I'm sorry, but I'm unable to attach a copy of the file by dragging and dropping. Is there another method please?
Cheers,
John.

The only method is to use the Browse button under the Reply box to identify the file to be attached.

Make sure the file is not bloated with versions and does not include a video or graphics.

More specifically, make sure it isn't bigger than 900KB.

Possibly the reason why it is bigger than 900K!

I've tried various ways of cutting back on the file, such as cutting out all the wind instruments, making it strings only. I even extracted the 1st violin part on its own, but that only brought it down from 1.48 Mb to 1.42 Mb! I wonder if I could photograph the part of the score where the bar numbers stop?
Cheers,
John.

You clearly have many redundant "versions" stored inside the same score file. Go to ribbon tab Review -> Versions -> Edit Versions and then Export the current Version as a stand-alone .sib score file, which should be easily small enough to attach to this forum.

Pictures of scores are of no use in diagnosing problems in this area.

Unless you particularly USE the Versions feature to refer to earlier stages in the score's progress, you could even go to the Edit Versions page and delete all but the Current version. Sometimes people think keeping Versions is a security feature, guarding against a corrupted file. It isn't. All the Versions are stored in the one sib file. If it goes bad, you lose them all.

Many thanks everyone forputting me wise about redundant versions. I think I can nowattach the current version to this message. I also think I have hit on a way of giving various bars numbers even if they are not allowed in the rules. I switch from panorama to page view and use the section marked "To Coda" to add the number above the bar concerned. I believe the occasional bar number at, say, the end of each page of the music I am copying from, taten together with rehearsal marks, is a good aid to "navigating" the score.

John

The problem is the 1x repeat bracket at bars 171-174. Replace it with the type with the hooked end, your bar numbers will return. (And playback, if required, will get past bar 174.)

Corrected version attached.

Many thanks, Laurence, for "unsnookering" me. I thought I remembered bar numbers continuing after two ended repeats on previous occasions.

John.

A repeat bracket that 'goes back' needs to be closed-end. The final one, which 'carries on' must be open. This is a part of standard notation that Sibelius playback (and hence bar numbering) is fussy about!
