inconsistent tacet bars in parts
Posted by William Armiger - 15 Feb 04:58PM
Would someone be kind enough to advise me about where I have gone wrong in the formatting of orchestral parts in the attached piece.

I'm in the process of generally tidying up the orchestral parts but have met with a problem concerning the automatic insertion of 'Tacet' in movements where an instrument is not required.

e.g. the cor anglais part is correctly marked 'Tacet' in two movements but not in the final movement IV (which segues into V without a pause) and where there are many lines of multi-rest bars..

I have treated the final 2 movements as a single item, with a final bar-line right at the end.
Advice much appreciated.

Tacet will only appear where there are 2 final barlines separated by empty bars.

Some of your bar rests are not bar rests but semibreve rests.
There are objects contained within bars which means they are not empty.

If a part is meant to be tacet, select the bars (in the part) and press [delete].

Just one further thing.

In the piece I'm working on, there is only a single strand of cor anglais in one movement, which would be played by Oboe 1.

Is there a way of incorporating those few bars of cor anglais into the Oboe Part score, as a 2nd stave above the oboe stave, without having bus and bars of cor anglais tacet as well ?

I could, I suppose, simply change the instrument in the 1 oboe, put in the CA part and then revert to oboe 1 at the end ?

This - the situation where a single player picks up a different instrument - is precisely what Instrument Changes in Sibelius are for.

It is more usual to ask Oboe 2 to double on Cor Anglais. But if you are writing for specific players, do what you like!
