I'm having difficulty with playback here.

I have imported the house style for the LASS string library and it works very well. I have harp and oboe from Vienna Symphonic Library. I tried importing the house style for just those instruments by highlighting the staves and then importing the house style, but it then seems to affect the playback of the LASS strings staves, so I'm not sure how to have two different house styles in the score at the same time. Is this possible?

It is always the case that importing a House Style will overwrite the settings that it has in common with any previous House Style. House Styles apply to the whole score, not to parts of one.

You do this with the Preferred Sounds function in the Playback Configuration. There's got to be a tutorial out there somewhere. Anyone?

Yes, Laurence, but I suspect that the problems that Stephen is grappling with relate to the House Styles (or "templates") that both LASS and VSL use in order to modify the Playback Dictionary and Instrument Definitions to suit their own particular sample libraries.

well, when I was using the LASS one, I then decided to import the VSL house style by first selecting the staves with the Vienna Instruments on, and then importing it. But what happened when I hit playback was that the LASS strings were a lot louder than before, and out of balance, so I just undid this and it went back to the normal playback I had before.

It would be great if there was some workaround for this.

It's quite possible that there is. But I (and most others) cannot afford to purchase both LASS and VSL just to investigate how to make them work together.

Having already got all the kit, you are the person best placed to pursue the investigation, and establish what it is about the House Style for X that is affecting the playback of Y, and/or vide-versa.

Hi Robin and Laurence,

sorry it took so long to get back to you. I wanted to try some things and experiment before I got back to you first. I've been testing scores with

Lass by itself and LASS housestyle
Lass with VSL but only LASS housestyle
Lass with vsl with vsl and lass style combined.
VSL by itself with the same score

They both seem to work well together. I may have imagined I heard a sound difference with both combined possibly. But having checked the scores various ways, I'm pretty satisfied you can have both working together. However, when with LASS and vsl, I've only tried it with starting out with LASS staves with LASS housestyles first, and then with using vsl, I highlighted the staves I that vsl instruments were using, and only imported the vsl housestyle to those staves. It seemed to work well, so I was pretty happy with that. I also tried it without importing the vsl housestyle for the vsl staves, and they also seemed to work well, and articulations on the score triggered the correct articulations in the libraries loaded. However, I did notice a problem with the vsl housestyle being uses - the "sf" on a note is meant to trigger an sfz sample, but it does not. I will have to ask on the vsl forum and see if I get an answer to that. I could most possibly be missing doing something to the score that could be causing this, so hopefully I will get to the bottom of that problem.
