Gliss over several noteheads
Posted by Zivkovic - 10 Jan 09:51AM
Hello.
How can I create a snapping glissando (Sibelius 8.7.2) that connects two note-heads, which are separated by one or more headless notes?

You can't. Make a non-magnetic gliss and position the end handles manually.

That's pity. Because they just introduced a "smart" gliss.
Is there any way to suggest this for a future release (email, or website)?

The "smart" magnetic gliss is in fact not a "Line", but a modified version of the internal Sibelius objects that implement ties or slides. Therefore it only works between one note and an immediately following note, just like ties and slides.

To make suggestions for future changes, see:

Thank you, I didn't know for that site.

Is that officially monitored by Sibelius team? I just wonder, since there are so many things posted there, but numerous are not completed, including ones from years ago.
Just curious.

You are spot-on with your observation. Some would say Ideascale is pretty pointless.

You can drag even a magnetic gliss to another note, but playback will act as though you are glissing between adjacent notes.

Even with a non magnetic gliss, playback really only works between 2 notes.

If you have a Harp, which has a specific tuning, you can use the Harp Gliss Playback plugin to gliss between 2 notes with notes in between and it will create MIDI messages to playback between those start and end notes. You may have to silence the ones in between. I don't know a generic way to playback glisses between non adjacent notes.

What is smart about a magnetic gliss is that it positions itself well for adjacent notes, and it moves as the note pitches adjust.

If you don't care about playback, you can drag either type of gliss line where you want it to go.

The problem with the present (new) gliss.-line is that it doesn't react flexibly if it is dragged above an empty notehead to the another notehead, as it does happen with normal line that snaps to the noteheads, and reacts magnetic.

I don't need the playback, therefore a magnetic gliss line between ANY two noteheads would be good to have implemented. In the example above, the glissando occurs de facto and de jure between two adjacent notes (as if we would open it and examine in a piano-roll), however the limitation of the binary values of rhythm doesn't allow us to write it in another way just having two noteheads sitting next to each other.

Hi

You can use a hidden tuplet in pretty much every situation in order to get two adjacent notes to attach the magnetic glissando line to. Then you would need to add the other missing notes in another voice.

In the example you show above, a 6:7 eighth note (quaver) tuplet at beat 1 would fill the duration correctly, and then use voice 2 to show the missing note(s).

But it's a bid fiddly, and so I would use the non-magnetic lines.

A non magnetic gliss does not snap to notes; it usually starts out above the staff, waiting to be dragged into place. When you create a magnetic gliss it will snap to the originating note and to the following note or rest. You should then be able to drag either end wherever you want, though it will still playback from the original notes.

FWIW, the downloadable plugin Line Between Notes will let you select 2 arbitrary notes and can draw a non-magnetic gliss between them. It does this even post-8.7, and never creates magnetic glisses.

One big advantage of the plugin is that it positions the line ends as close as it can to the selected notes.

The usual playback caveats apply.

See screenshot for an example.
