Notation (rests) protocol
Posted by Adrian Drover - 07 Jan 10:47AM
In 12/8 time (I hate 12/8), when I plant a note in the first half of the bar, Sib splits the last 2 beats into 2 dotted quarter rests rather than a dotted half. Is that correct? It doesn't split the last two beats in 4/4. A dotted half in 12/8 time looks a whole lot better to me, but I can't figure out how to make that the default.

Gould seems to agree with you (pp 161, 163). I don't know how to change the default, though.

I prefer the dotted half rests too. I started a thread on this matter here http://www.sibelius.com/cgi-bin/helpcenter/chat/chat.pl?com=thread&start=711161&groupid=3&&guest=1

You can't change the default behavior but as mentioned in that thread there is a plugin "Dotted Minim Rests" that will change them as a batch.

Did you investigate that plugin, Adrian? I find it helpful in the situation you describe.

Hi Mark. Thank you for your reply and my apologies for not yet responding to your posts. I wasn't aware of a plug-in for this, nor have I investigated it. For the few times this happens, I find it easy enough to edit the bars in question as I go along. Just wondered why Sib chooses to write 2 dotted quarter rests rather than a dotted half. Seems illogical and cluttersome.

In fairness to Sibelius, according to the rules of notation (Gould!) either 2 x dotted quarter rests or a dotted half rest are acceptable, so Sibelius is not doing the wrong thing. Like you, I prefer the dotted half rest. If I have an orchestral movement in 12/8 there will be many, many bars to change away from the Sibelius default, so I find the plugin very handy.
