microtone notation
Posted by fbechodoc - 05 Jan 09:00PM
I am notating a flute part that includes microtones, including half flats and three-quarter flats. It appears that the default symbol in Sibelius for a three-quarter flat is a natural sign with a downward arrow next to a regular flat sign. The accidental I would prefer to use is a flat with a downward arrow -- it's easier to read. I have tried to change the first symbol to the second in Edit Symbols, but what it does is to superimpose the flat with downward arrow rather than substitute it. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'd even prefer the back to back flats to the natuaral flat combination (which I don't even see in the Behind Bars text). Thank you.

What you describe is not the default symbol in Sibelius. Default accidentals are on the 6th keypad. There you'll see the three-quarter flat as 'db', the back to back flat.
For your purpose you need to Edit the db: first choose an empty slot and then add the b with downwards arrow. In this way it will correspond to the 6th keypad > 3

Thank you for your help, Wim. When I click db on the 6th keypad, Sibelius inputs natural + b with a down arrow on the natural. That's what I meant by default. I have tried your solution -- it hasn't worked for me, but that may be because I'm not doing it properly. Here's what I did: Edit Symbols --> Accidentals --> Select db --> Edit --> select empty slot --> select b with down arrow --> OK. After I did that, when I clicked db on the 6th keypad, a natural + flat with a down arrow on the natural was input, not b with down arrow.

When instead I select the natural w/down arrow + flat --> Edit --> empty space, nothing happens -- the symbol in the staff on the Symbol page is black, not blue, and it does not go away.

Thank you for your trouble. If you know the solution, I would be grateful for it.

Well, my 'default' here refers to the Standard Sibelius House Style. It sounds as if Appearance and Notation in your file has been worked on already. Appearance > Import House Style lets you choose by different Standard options. If you uncheck al layout options as Page Set-up, your file won't change too much.
Of course in the actual situation, you need to Edit what appears under the 3-key, which is the natural and flat with a down arrow.
Otherwise feel free mail me the file.
