Note input on touchscreen
Posted by fehilly4 - 31 Dec 09:35AM
Hi all,

I recently purchased a new laptop for the soul purpose of using Sibelius on. Its a 2 in 1 so can be used as a tablet. But there doesn't appear to be a way of inputting notes using touch. I have since discovered my laptop will not support an active stylus.

Is there any way of using Sibelius exclusively on a touchscreen display without a mouse or stylus?

Thanks
David

If the touch-screen is supported by Windows 10, then a touch will be the same as a mouse-click (or can be configured to be so, in Windows), and you can use Sibelius as if you were using a mouse. Though it's pretty unlikely that you can touch a screen with sufficient precision to input music on correct pitches.

As Robin says, a touchscreen should be able to be configured to emulate a mouse. But I think you'll find a real mouse and keyboard much more productive.

Thank you for the reply’s,

I can drag a score about and pinch to zoom in and out etc but selecting a note length and tapping the staff won’t input a note. My plan B was to use the touchscreen as a substitute for the number pad for selecting note lengths (no number pad on the laptop) but evey time I tap the screen the mouse cursor moves to that point. It means I have to move the mouse back to the staff making it very frustrating. I already have a high end desktop I use for the bulk of my composing but I was looking for something more portable without spending thousands on somthing like a Microsoft Surface.

The Surface doesn't have a numeric keypad either (and is vastly over-priced for the amount of computer it is). Your best platform for portable Sibelius work is probably a standard Windows laptop in the £350-£400 price range. Plenty available with a 15" screen, 8GB RAM, an i5 processor and a full keyboard. Try to go more compact than this and you just won't get what you need.
