AutoSave Plugin???
Posted by Anastasio Rossi - 29 Dec 04:09AM
Has anyone written a plugin that can be configured to auto save a work in progress every X minutes?

A plugin cannot run in the background; you would have to manually run it at intervals. It would be simpler to just type ctrl/cmnd-s at the same interval.

A downside of either an automatic save (if it were possible) or the manual technique suggested by Bob is that a new copy of the score would be created in the Backup folder for every save ... whether or not there were any changes. Since there is a set number of backup files - 200 by default, I think - the backup folder could easily fill with many copies of an unchanged score. That sort of eliminates the usefulness of the Backup folder.

A much more useful technique is to manually save when you have something to save. (And yes, I know that many of us forget to do that.)

My take on this is that manually saving your work is just part of what you do - part of your work-flow, if you will: an extra mouse-click (in my case) every now and then (probably every couple of minutes when I'm working fast).

FWIW I use a 3rd party application called ForeverSave that does the CMD+S for you. It has "saved" me quite a few times!

Cheers

Seems to me that saving something at an inconvenient time is just as bad, or worse, than not saving at all. You may create a copy of something you really don't want.

ForeverSave is, in my opinion a very dangerous application..it actually writes over your original files, and doesnt copy and save them as a backup elsewhere.

So as has happened to me, if youre having problems with a file, and ForeverSave saves that file it writes over the good copy, with the problem copy--thus losing your file.

Regarding this recommendation, pls see this thread:

http://www.sibelius.com/cgi-bin/helpcenter/chat/chat.pl?com=thread&start=709226&groupid=3&words=&name=Morabito

And heres what the company had to say:

"Hi Bob,

Sorry for the long delay in responding! Yes, ForeverSave overwrites your files just before it creates a backup of them."

I would be very careful, if one chooses at all to use this program.

Thanks Bob
