Sib. 7.1.3: select or filter multirests only
Posted by Joris Blanckaert - 22 Dec 08:55AM (edited 22 Dec 09:10AM)
Hi,

In my orchestra parts I have a lot of empty bars (hidden bar rests) and multirests (also hidden). I want the empty bar rests hidden, but I want to view the multirest number. I changed the multirest symbol from H bar to blank, but now I need to filter the multirest numbers in order to unhide them. I can't see a way with the advanced filter, since the multirest numbers apparently aren't defined as a text style. Also the bar rest filter is not useful, since it selects the empty bars too.

Any ideas ?

Thanks,
Joris

You can do this in Appearance/EngravingRules/BarRests. Uncheck 'Show bar rests'. For multirests, select 'blank'. The multirest number remains visible. I'm not sure tho' why you want to do this in the parts.

PS. I don't know what you did to lose the multirest numbers. Select all. In the main filter (not advanced) select 'Rests'. Hit shft/ctrl/h. This should make the number visible again w'out affecting the actual rest marking.

Thank you, Adrian, but the problem is that this applies to the complete score, and I only want this for the first movement. In the second movement I need to see all rests, like usual.

In the full score all empty bars (of the first movement) are blank. Musicians get instructions to do certain things there. This was done by hiding the full bar rests.
To avoid too many page turns I have multirests in the parts. These are still hidden, but then it is impossible for the musicians to follow. So they need to see the multirest numbers. If I filter all multirests to make them visible again, the filter also selects all "monorests" (one bar rest), which I have to hide manually.

I have added a PS to my previous reply, Joris, if this helps any. I'm pretty sure you will have to do this on a part to part basis rather than globally.

I think I have made things complicated :-)

So what I want (in score as well as parts):
- the rests in bars where there are other notes : they need to remain visible.
- all rests in empty bars : they need to be hidden => this applies only to first movement

In the parts I want to see the number of the multirests, just to enable musicians to follow (but, just as in the score, no rests).

If I use the normal filter and select rests, then also the rests in bars with notes are affected, which is undesired...

So if I blank out the multirest H-bar in the parts (via Engraving Rules), the multirest bars are visible (via filter bar rests) the way I want, but the problem is that also the one bar rests are visible, which I don't want. It would be solved if I could blank out the rest in a "one bar multirest" in Engraving Rules, but apparently this is not an option...

Have you unchecked this box (attached)?

Yes. But that one applies to the whole piece. You can't even manually make one bar rest visible again when this box is unchecked.

Thanks for trying !

(it's just a little strange that Sibelius handles one bar rests completely differently from multirests)

Bar rests are objects in a bar (as are notes and text). These can be individually selected.

A multirest is a property of a bar, and the multirest H-bar and its number can be selected by directly clicking on it. This will always select both the H-bar and the number of bars in the multirest. You can ctrl/cmnd click individual H-bars, and hide them (trying to delete them will only hide them).

You can't select the number separately from the H-bar. Plugins cannot manipulate the H-bar or bar number. Possibly the best you can do is to hide the H-bar and then add a text object for the number, which will have to be updated if the multirest status of the bar changes. So do that sort of thing only after the layout is settled.

A 1-bar multirest is kind of an odd hybrid. It has a bar rest that you can drag (unlike the H-bar), but you cannot select the bar rest and the "1" individually.

Selecting and hiding is about the only thing you can do individually to H-bars.
