I have a group of bars in a part which, although they are not empty, have everything hidden in that part. All the bars are still displayed. How do I make them display as a multirest?

Sibelius doesn't allow this. Only real empty bars with can display as multirests. However they can be hidden within 'Hide Empty Staves'

Thanks for the confirmation it can't be done. Is there a fundamental reason for this? Is it different in version 8?

No, there are no differences in any later versions of Sibelius. You can make multi-rests only out of bars that contain at most a single bar rest. Hidden music is not a bar rest.

Is this staff or system text? If the former, considering that it is hidden, do you really need it?

There'll be another way of achieving whatever you're trying to do. Maybe an additional stave with hidden, but playing, content, that will respond to Hide Empty Staves. But yes, for the purposes of Multirests hidden doesn't count as empty.

What I'm trying to achieve is a cue staff with vocals or lead instruments, which is then shared amongst various parts that need cues.

However, different parts need different cues, so I'm hiding the cues in a part when they are not relevant in that part (the part instrument itself is obviously tacet at that point).

Thus I want to have multirests when the part is tacet and the cue is not relevant.

Hi

There is a discussion here of this very issue.

tl;dr: you'll need a different cue staff for each part or group of parts which needs the same cues, and you'll have to copy the relevant material into each cue staff where needed.

Still seems to me that it would be easier to have a single cue staff, were it not for the multirest issue.

I ask again, is there a good reason why Sibelius doesn't allow multirests on staves with all contents hidden?

Because hidden is not empty. There can be good reasons for having hidden notes that playback.
