Undo is by default ctrl/cmnd-Z. There is an icon for it in the Ribbon above the File tab. Hover to see the shortcut.

It would seem that John does not know how the highlight got onto his score, nor what is its purpose. It could have been there for some time and actually saved in that state. Undo (ctrl/z) would have no effect other than to undo more recent doings which need to be preserved. When you select the highlight, a rectangular bordering box appears. This can be deleted along with the highlight.

In answer to the original question, a highlight is a marker that pinpoints an area that requires attention.

Further to Adrian's instruction
When you select the highlight, a rectangular bordering box appears. This can be deleted along with the highlight.

Ensure that you select the highlight and not the contents of the measure, which can easily be confused. Select just the highlight by clicking on its border, which will be outside of the measure.

Cheers,
Dave
