Adding Text
Posted by frankdk - 12 Nov 03:09PM
How do I add text to a page?

I want composer and arranger to show up on the first page using wildcards. The user guide that comes with v. 8.5 goes into great detail on how to edit existing and styles, but says nothing about how to enter text anew on a page.

I see how to add expressions and the like that are associated with notes in the score, but that's not what I want. I simply want text from the file info to appear on the first page of the score.

If you want the File Info to appear in the score, then you need to create a text object of the appropriate type (e.g. Composer), and code a "wildcard" into the text, to extract the data from the desired field of the File Info.

Look up "wildcards" in the Sibelius Reference.

That was my question. How do I create a text object? The phrase "create text object" does not occur in the Sibelius Reference. All references to text objects are descriptive or indicate how to edit them. I found no information on how to create them. As I wrote, I know how to use wildcards. I don't know how to create a text object.

I stumbled upon it.

Right-click in a blank area of the staff, select Text, then select the style desired. This produces a text cursor which allows text to be entered.

As we have discussed before in a previous thread, you create Text Objects from the Text Styles Gallery of the Text Tab.

See section "1.7 Text and dynamics" of the Sibelius Tutorials. If you have not worked though all the Sibelius Tutorials, it is a worthwhile exercise. You can find the Tutorials on the "Learn" tab of the "Quick Start" window.

Once you have the basics from the tutorials, then further details of each common Style are given in Chapter 5 of the Sibelius Reference.

If this helps, Wildcards:
"\$composer\"
"\$arranger\"

You CAN do it using the Gallery on the Ribbon. But the old 'R-click where you want it to go then use the menu' is, in my view, superior.

You can do clever things with Wildcards and the Info page. But mostly, if you want a text item in your score, just put it there. If it's in the appropriate Text Style, transfer to Parts will be automatic.

I don't think you'll need to create a new Text Style for what you want.

Sorry to be so dense about this. I usually find technical things easy to understand.

> As we have discussed before in a previous thread, you create Text Objects from the Text Styles Gallery of the Text Tab.

The phrase, "Text styles gallery," doesn't appear in the Sibelius Reference. When I go to the Text menu, there is a Styles box, but no Styles Gallery option. When I click Styles, I get an Edit Text Styles widget, but no option to create a text object. I can edit existing text styles or create a new text style, but I don't want to do that. I want to place some text on the score using an existing style.

> See section "1.7 Text and dynamics" of the Sibelius Tutorials. If you have not worked though all the Sibelius Tutorials, it is a worthwhile exercise. You can find the Tutorials on the "Learn" tab of the "Quick Start" window.

The first time I ran Sibelius, it presented the option of going through the tutorials, which I accepted. I did several of them and remembered all I could. After that, it never presented the option of the tutorials, so I didn't know how to get back to them.

Searching the Reference for "Quick Start window," I found it. It's under Files > Preference > Other.

Thanks for your patience.

What version of Sibelius do you have, Frank?

8.5. I believe this has all the features currently available except cloud storage. Is that correct?

Please consult the Sibelius Tutorial, rather than the Reference. The Reference is not intended to be a Tutorial on how to do things.

You are clicking on the wrong button. See attachment. You should click on the "More" button for the Text Styles Gallery. All these buttons and other things on the ribbon display tool-tip help if you hover the mouse pointer over them.

> After that, it never presented the option of the tutorials, so I didn't know how to get back to them.

It is on the "Learn" tab of the Quick Start window, which appears every time that you launch Sibelius (unless you have disabled it, which is probably not a good idea).

I don't remember doing that, but with the way my memory is lately, maybe.

I think I've got the text part down, thanks to you.

I'm not too keen on the Quick Start page either, though I sometimes seem to get there by mistake! But the Tutorials may also be found at the bottom of the File menu in Sibelius, under 'Help'.

Sibelius has two menu systems. The old one from Sibelius 6 and before, and the 'Ribbon' which was bolted on at Sibelius 7. And yes, pejorative overtones are intended. I'll spare you the full rant, it can be found easily enough!

In the File menu, under Help, I have Plug-ins, Preferences, and Exit. There's nothing about Learning or Tutorials there.

Maybe it's my computer.

I found it. Plug-ins, Preferences, and Exit are indented, so they look like they are sub-categories of Help. Clicking on Help brings up another list.
