Page margins in parts change for no reason
Posted by David Murray - 10 Nov 02:36PM
Working on the Critical Edition of Porgy & Bess parts.

Page margins in parts change without notice. For no reason my dynamic part page margins change from the global part setting and I cannot get rid of this. This is the page margin and not the staff margin so it is unaffected by Special Page Break settings. There are no special breaks and if I select a specific barline hit Page Break, the incorrect margin shifts to the following page. Very Frustrating.

Sounds as if these are not margin errors but indents by inadvertence. Select the handle at the end of the system which has a wrong margin and do Reset Position.

Tried that. No change. And to further complicate things it is only in the winds (all of them). The strings brass and perc are fine.

Correction, the page margin as defined by the dotted blue line does not change. The position of the page numbers and headers do change and cannot be restored to their correct position.

Can you post the part which is affected or email?

Here is one of the parts extracted. It behaves the same. Fls down through Bcl are affected. Bsn on down to stgs are not.
Note the change occurs between pg 45&46 (2nd and 3rd page of file).

Hi

That's a weird one.

It is just the top staff margin that is misbehaving. In the attached part, I was able by trial and error to push the bad margin change through the score, so now (see attached - in 8.5 format let me know if you need it backsaved) I think that they are fine.

I did this by selecting barlines and introducing page breaks to see if I could track down which bar the problem started in. Gradually it moved on page by page.

It may be that doing this once in the full file will solve it for all the parts. I don't know. I also can't work out why it would affect some parts and not others.

Someone else might have a better answer for you.

The Sibelius folks in London are continuing to look at the file, but in the meantime the fix is to go to Edit Text Styles, select the text style, to go Vertical position and check the box for "Relative to first page margins only" A big thank you to Bill Holab for forwarding the file.

Could it be that the parts were not part of the default set? I know that if you create new parts, say by using Parts-->Copy & Change instrument, the parts have the default margins as set up in the MSS paper, rather than any margins you have previously set in Parts-->Part Appearance. I know I would much rather all parts adopted the margins I set but they never seem to.
