Sib. 6.x: creating Roman Numerals
Posted by Lawrence Spector - 22 Oct 01:12AM
Hello,
I am writing guitar music where we use Roman Numerals next to a Barre sign. For the Barre sign I go to Z and find the Alla Breve symbol because I can't find another Barre sign that looks correct.

When I try to but the Roman Numeral next to the Barre to indicate the Barre is at the fifth position it gives me the Arabic Numeral 5.

Create>Text>Other Staff Text>Roman numerals. I then type in 5 and it gives an Arabic 5 not a Roman Numeral.

Please explain how to get a Roman Numeral instead of an Arabic Numeral.
Thank you,
Lawrence

FYI: The Alla Breve indicates a 1/2 Barre. To get a full Barre I would choose the Common Time symbol.

The Roman numeral text style is for Roman figuration representing scale degrees. If you are using this style for any other purpose and want "V", you type "V", not "5". You could equally use technique text style.

There is no barre sign; there is the letter "C" which stands for "cejilla," meaning barre in Spanish. Some people use the letter "C" before the roman numeral and some use "B" for "barre" and some don't use any letter, just the roman numeral alone. As Adrian said, you type letters, not numbers, for roman numerals.

If you really want a C with a line through it for a partial barre (which is NOT a common notation), use a cent sign character: "¢" or some similar character. In other words, use text characters, not symbols and not arabic numbers.

Thank you James and Adrian. James, where do I find the cent sign character for half barres?

For the cent sign:

On a PC type alt 0162
On a mac type option 4

select it and choose a font to your liking.
