Sib. 7.5: High Sierra
Posted by kevingunther - 09 Oct 05:01PM
I know that High Sierra is not officially supported but I was wondering if anyone has taken the plunge and if it is working for them.

I would like to know this, too.

The latest is that somewhere Sam said that since the default for the APFS file system is case-insensitive, that Sib may just work with respect to calling into its sound files for playback. Presumably they are checking if this is so.

There may be MIDI problems with the initial release of High Sierra as I believe other audio apps are having issues with it.

Edit: Sweetwater has a nice list of music companies and their current compatibility with High Sierra: https://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/high-sierra-macos-10-13-compatibility-information/

And there is a security problem with High Sierra exposing the contents of Keychain unencrypted.

Edit: Apple has fixed the Keychain security problem with a supplemental update.

Since Sib 8.7 has been released, Sam has said that qualifying it with High Sierra is the next priority. So we shall see.

Oops! Sorry for the double post!

I'm using Sibelius 8.7, but I'm posting here because the original post related to High Sierra. I'm wondering if anyone is using NotePerformer with Sibelius 8.7 and High Sierra, and if so, have you had any problems? If so, what kind of problems?

Not yet; I'm trying to decide whether to upgrade to High Sierra. I will if people are not having problems.

Avid says to wait for now. Hopefully they try it first and let us know.

They always say to wait. But if it’s working for people, I don’t see any reason not to.

I seem to recall that in a recent email, Sam said that they might not have to make any changes in Sibelius, since APFS is now case insensitive. And anyway, my Fusion disc is HFS+.

I decided to go ahead and update to High Sierra, and Sibelius 8.7 seems to be working just fine with it.

Thank you, John Melby, for keeping us posted. Because you have a Fusion drive, you still have HFS+ and not APFS on it, yes? MIDI is working fine as far as you know? Do you have any older versions of Sib and have you tried them to see how they work?

Right, HFS+. NotePerformer is working like a charm, and I've not noticed any glitches at all. I haven't tried any of my older versions of Sibelius.

Sorry to drag up an old thread guys - I haven't found a more recent one.

I'm running 7.5 on Sierra on an SSD. I am finally thinking about plunging for the High Sierra upgrade - from everything I have read, if I keep the APFS non-case-sensitive, things should work ok (including playback).
Has anyone tried this set up who could confirm for me?

Officially, Avid only supports the latest version of Sib on High Sierra. The folks who have tried the new OS with earlier versions of Sib have been fine. At this time (December 2017), High Sierra installation defaults to case insensitive APFS on SSD so you won't have to do anything special. Please let us know how things go for you.

I've updated. Haven't done much with Sib, but I have opened a couple of large orchestral files and didn't have any problems with sounds loading/playback so I'm going to assume that all is well!

Thanks for the help.
