Sib. 7.5: Ride Cymbal Dynamics are not Working
Posted by Stephen L. Martin - 20 Sep 05:31PM
I am using a ride cymbal bell (diamond notehead on F). It doesn't respond to accents or ppp. Dynamics work on my other instruments. What am I doing wrong?

I can never get believable volume with dynamics on drum notes (drums too loud, cymbals too quiet) so I adjust with live velocity (inspector).

For playback, I often have a score where the different instruments of a drum kit are on their own staff. Much easier to control volume.
ie. kick on one staff. Snare and toms on another. Cymbals on another.

If using Sibelius Sounds, the Smart Knobs in the Mixer can be used to tweak a better balance within a drum set. Try these settings with the Sibelius 7 'Drum Kit (Jazz) instrument'.

My problem isn't balance. It is that playback only responds to some dynamics and not others. I enter the dynamics using the correct font and in the same voice number as the notes. I have a case where my bass responds to a diminuendo and stays at that level regardless of the subsequent dynamics.

For the diminuendo, I am using the cres./dim. playback plug in. Is there something I need to do to counteract the cres./dim. playback plug in besides a simple dynamic mark like f?

The diminuendo plugin leaves the instrument permanently at a low level of whichever MIDI parameter you selected to use, and that situation will not be corrected by a Dynamics mark.

You need to manually insert a MIDI command to restore whichever parameter you are using to what its value had been before use of the plugin.

Hi Robin, thanks for your reply. It work beautifully, but brings up the question, don't the expression marks issue MIDI volume and velocity changes?

It depends on the Instrument, and how it is defined in the SoundSet to react to Dynamic markings. It might not use MIDI volume: it might use another MIDI parameter for Dynamics. If the instrument uses a different MIDI parameter for Dynamics than the one you chose in the plugin, then you will need to reset the MIDI parameter that the plugin changed back to its previous value. If you changed "Volume", you need to reset it back to the Volume setting on the relevant slider in the Mixer.
