Gliss lines causing havoc with tempo
Posted by Adrian Drover - 11 Sep 04:21PM
Attached score (sib8.6). Apart from sounding awful, does anyone know why the trombone slides at measure 9 are affecting tempo. It's the same in 7.1.3, but I thought that 8.6 was supposed to have made improvements with glissandi.

No tempo change happens for me when I play it back in 8.6. However, on repeated listenings, I did start to feel dizzy.

I am not a great judge, but I also don't detect tempo changes with the slides. Windows 10, Sibelius 7 Sounds.8.6.1.

Thanx, guys, for testing. Seems like I still have my latency problem, which is much worse in 8.6 than in 7.1.3. (It takes 10 seconds for Bob's "Add rehearsal double barline" plugin to react, even on this short 16 measure snippet). Do gliss lines use up a lot of RAM? I do wish I could get to the bottom of this problem.

What have you tried so far?

Hi Robin, you sent me a page full of instruction some time ago which my son (he's more technically minded than I) followed to the letter. Unfortunately, I still have the problem. In the attachment I posted, the tempo slows down dramatically in measures 9 & 10, then races thru' measure 11 to catch up. The score plays fine with just 1 or 2 trombone staves selected (any 2). There is a slight uneasiness with 3 trombones selected, but very pronounced with all 4. I've made an mp3 file via Audacity which I can send privately to demonstrate this.

Have you examined the PC with "Resource Monitor" or "Task Manager" to see whether there are processes which are hogging the CPU or hogging memory?

Sorry, Robin, for the long delay in my reply and thank you for your time and patience in trying to resolve my problem. I much appreciate your concern. With the help of my son we have followed your instruction. Nothing unusual was observed. But I have since discovered that when I switch playback configuration to Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, no time warp occurs. So I conclude that the problem is related to my Yamaha playback. The reason I have never noticed this before is that I've never before written such an involved gliss structure as that posted above. The problem only happens when "instrument default" or "continuous" is selected. There is no time warp when "chromatic" is selected.

I've also discovered that this problem is not related to the other latency I have experienced in 8.5 & 8.6. I have just discovered what is causing this and am posting this under a new heading.
