I never met Derek in person, but he was a very active contributor to this forum, and I worked with him for many years as a Sibelius beta tester.

He was a delightful man, and he produced an astonishing amount of music. He always asked interesting questions.

I'm very sorry to hear this. Never have met him, but I just love playing the tuba part in his "Serenade". Irregular meter, but so easy and effective.

We exchanged a few e-mails, and he kindly commented on some of my music, and said that whenever passing I must pop in for a cup of tea. Well it wasn`t me that did the passing . . . . Rest peacefully Derek.
He composed around 110 symphonies - is this a record I wonder?

"He composed around 110 symphonies - is this a record I wonder?"

116, apparently.

Research tells me Johann Melchior Molter (1696–1765) wrote over 140 symphonies.

I regret I never met Derek in person but we met as many of us did via the beta testers 'sewing circle' through versions 3-7.

We exchanged emails mostly about cricket and the weather which always seemed to be awful.

I was so glad that he remarried and I believe happily.

He was a great and valued contributor to the development of Sibelius and the world will def. be the poorer for his passing. RIP

Though he's not as well known in the USA, we brass players will miss his music as well.
Adrian, when I lived in Lincolnshire, I would frequently visit the large sheet music store in York (can't recall the name) and send things home to my local ensemble. In the first batch of music was the Bourgeois SERENADE. It's been a staple of the Indianapolis Brass Choir ever since. I played a thing or two of yours as well, including Wee Cooper o' Fife.

It's my pet hate. G11 used for any one of several chords, none of which are a canonical G11.

=======================================

I interpret G11 as being all the chord tones (odd numbered intervals) up to and including 11 but omitting the 3rd. In other words a G9 with suspended 4th, or Dm7/G. I find it useful in a crowded score to write G11, and believe that it is more clear to the bass player than is Dm7/G in quickly recognizing the root.

PS. What does "canonical" mean? Google describes it as "proper to the Roman church". What's that got to do with Tin Pan Alley? ;-)

This useage of 'canon'.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_(fiction)

It breaks the 'pile of thirds' system of extended dominant 7ths. (Whereas G(#11) doesn't.) A mess. Let's call it F/G, Dm7/G, G7sus or G9sus - depending on whether we want D and/or G in the upper structure.

But then, a chord symbol is just a chord symbol...

They used to buy some of my brass band charts. So did Band Supplies in Leeds. Wondered why they both went quiet. Maybe my works put them both out of business.

Not a bad effort Adrian, but your melody is not a middle 8.

This thread is really to remember Derek, but I`m sure he wouldn`t mind this little humorous deviation.

I once put his name forward for `Composer of the week` (Radio 3) but it fell on stony ground, as pretty nearly everything does.

Who`s Sorry Now doesn`t have a `middle` 8 Adrian - it`s a 16 bar melody repeated, with a varied end. Similar, yes, but not strictly a middle 8. 10/10 for your research tho` :) [I say come back our Gracie!] Wasn`t entertainment strange in those days - George Formby, Norman Wisdom etc. Derek Bourgeois was a school boy, and probably had written his first symphony.

YES, Ian...Banks it was. A veritable playground back then--1988/89 when I was in Lincs.

It's probably a casualty of online outlets.

Not that I have any objection to online outlets, but there was just SOMETHING about that tactile act of picking up a set of parts, looking at the euphonium part, then deciding whether or not to buy the piece, since the quality of the euphonium part is the SOLE criterion by which a band should evaluate what pieces to buy...and Derek Bourgeois wrote some great ones!

The other nice part of the Banks experience for me was chatting with the clerks and other shoppers and learning from them. I went at least once every two weeks.
