Sib 8/Windows 10: Audio Engine Error - Bad Settings
Posted by emduncan - 19 Aug 03:00PM
Hi,

I've just purchased Sibelius 8 on a new windows 10 laptop and am getting the warning message "Audio Engine Error: Bad Settings" on startup. I can hear playback sounds although there is a significant delay between inputting a note and hearing the sound.

There was a similar thread for a related problem using Sib7/Windows 7 but none of the fixes seemed to work.

Was there also an MMSYSTEMOUT error message?

What playback configuration do you have selected as current?

What version of Windows 10 (4-digit number such as 1607 or 1703)?

Please attach screen-shots of the following Sibelius dialogue windows:
1. Playback Devices;
2. Audio Engine Options.

There are no other error messages.

General MIDI (basic) is selected since there are no other options. I did install Sibelius 7 Sounds but am currently reinstalling since it doesn't seem to have linked up correctly.

I am using windows 10 home 1703.

Screenshots attached.

You are seeing the "Audio Engine Error: Bad Settings" message because Sibelius has been configured with incompatible settings:
1. the activated player devices in the current Playback Configuration include the "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" player device.
2. the current "Interface" in "Audio Engine Options" is of an ASIO type.
The above two settings are incompatible. Change one or the other or both. If you wish to retain ASIO playback, you must install and switch to using the Sibelius Sounds sample library though Sibelius Player. If you wish to continue using "Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth" then you must select an Interface other than ASIO type: look for an Interface of "(DS)" type for the Realtek High Definition Audio device.

Since there are also issues with certain Realtek Windows device drivers, please also ascertain the date and version number of the Realtek drivers:
- open Windows Device Manager;
- expand the section "Sound, video and games controllers";
- double-click "Realtek High Definition Audio";
- in the Properties panel, slick tab "Driver";
- copy back to us the date and version number of the driver.

Pay no attention to Windows if it tells you that any device driver is up-to-date: Windows has no way of knowing that, as stated.

I have reinstalled sounds but these still aren't appearing under playback options. How can I switch to this sample library?

What was the full name of the file that you ran to install the sounds?

I exported the zip file downloaded from the website Sibelius_Sounds_7_5_0_Win_81290 and ran Sibelius 7 Sounds Installer.

That is not the Sounds Installer for Sibelius 8: that was the one for Sibelius 7.5.

However, it should at least have given you an active Sibelius Player.

Please run this precise command at the Windows command line, and copy back to us the precise output (use copy-and-paste in both cases):

reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Avid\Sibelius Sounds\Sibelius 7 Sounds\ContentPath"

The output was:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Avid\Sibelius Sounds\Sibelius 7 Sounds\ContentPath
(Default) REG_SZ C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\Sibelius Sounds\Sibelius 7 Sounds

On the My Account/My Products section of the Avid website the only option to download sounds was the Sibelius Sounds 7.5. Is there a way to get the correct installer?

> (Default) REG_SZ C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\Sibelius Sounds\Sibelius 7 Sounds

Now, in Windows File Explorer, navigate to the location:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\Sibelius Sounds
and right-click the sub-folder "Sibelius 7 Sounds", and select "Properties".

Please attach a screen-shot of that Properties panel.

The correct sounds installer will be in the "Sibelius" (not "Sibelius 7.5") section of your account at
http://my.avid.com/products
It will be listed as "Sibelius Sounds 7.5.1 (Win) 23.22 GB".
But, once you have a successful installation of the 7.5 version you do not need the complete 7.5.1 installer: you only need the 7.5.1 updater.

By the way, you will not get "Sibelius Sounds" to show up and become available until after you have resolved the conflict in "Audio Engine Options".

Here is the properties file.

I have resolved the audio engine issue now thank you and the lag has gone.

I can't find the sounds installer that you're talking about. This is all that appears on my products page.

OK, the Sibelius 7 Sounds sample library is now installed, and the playback configuration "sibelius 7 Sounds" should now be working for you: please check that, or attach a screen-shot of "Playback Devices" again, with playback configuration "Sibelius 7 Sounds" selected.

It appears that Avid have posted the old version of the Sounds Installer for this particular upgrade route. You will need to manually install the Bass Clarinet Patch fix:
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Troubleshooting/Unable-to-play-back-some-scores-in-Sibelius-problem-with-Bass-Clarinet-patch
which will bring your installation up to 7.5.1 level.

Yes - Sibelius 7 Sounds is working with "Sibelius player" as the active device. I've also copied across that patch fix.

If I switch back to ASIO I lose all sound and get the "bad audio settings error" again. Should this be happening? Or should I just live with the DS type?

> If I switch back to ASIO I lose all sound and get the "bad audio settings error" again.

To diagnose that, please:
- configure Sibelius so you get that problem on launch;
- quit and launch Sibelius so that problem is recorded;
- quit Sibelius;
- click Start -> Avid -> Sibelius User Data;
- in the folder that opens, open sub-folder "PlogueEngine";
- in folder "PlogueEngine", double-click "PlogueEngine_x64.log" to open it into Notepad;
- in Notepad, Select All (Ctrl-A), and Copy (Ctrl-C);
- in your next post in this thread, Paste (Ctrl-V). The paste will be large: do not truncate it.

Thanks. The error message is near the end:
"Error number: -9997 message: Invalid sample rate"

In "Audio Engine Options", please click the button "ASIO Setup" and attach a screen-shot of what is found behind that button.

Well, clutching at straws, try pushing that slider all the way to the right, then close it, then quit and restart Sibelius.

Nope, still bad audio settings and the error looks the same.

If it helps, when I configure Sib 7 Sounds with ASIO no device shows up on the right hand side of the playback devices box (under active devices).

OK, I think it is time to try for a Realtek device driver update.

Does the manufacturer of your PC offer a support site with device driver updates? If so, check that site and report what version number is now being offered, and tell us.

Then go back to the Windows Device Manager entry (where you were before to read the driver date and version). This time click tab "Details", pull down "Property" to "Hardware IDs", then copy the top line of box "Value" and paste it into your reply.

Dell is saying that all drivers are up to date and doesn't look like it wants to give me more information than that. I'm assuming that means the version they are offering is the one I mentioned earlier.

The hardware ID at the top (there were 2) is: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0225&SUBSYS_10280740&REV_1000

There is a more up-to-date version of that driver available from Realtek directly.

Send your browser to http://www.realtek.com/ then click link "HD Audio Codec Driver" and follow instructions through to the download list, choose the 64-bit version, download, and install.

But if ASIO still does not work, then don't worry too much, and use a different interface. Next best to ASIO is WASAPI, then DS. MME is worst.

Have done the update but still no luck with ASIO. I'll stick with WASAPI for now and keep an eye out for updates.

Thank you so much for all your help!

I have a 1st iteration Surface Book and Sibelius 8.6.1. ASIO4ALL works with some fiddling. Make sure the sample rate is set the same in both Windows and ASIO. I tend to stay with 48khz and a 1024 sample buffer when using NotePerformer. I also set a latency compensation of around 160 samples in ASIO4ALL's advanced menu.

Not all drivers on the suface book automatically switch between the built-in speakers (1-2) and the headphone jack (3-4) with the Realtek/Intel drivers, so if you're having trouble sending audio to the headphone jack, switch to the 3-4 pair for the output in your driver.
