Attempting to open a Sibelius file today I was met by an error message to the effect that the file qtxmlpatterns4.dll is not meant to run on Windows, is faulty, etc. Inspection showed that the file is in fact empty. This has happened literally from one day to the next and is pretty disconcerting.
I clearly need to either reinstall Sibelius 7.1.3 from scratch or somehow repair my installation. Can someone advise me how to do this? My original media contain the original Sibelius 7, and years ago I upgraded to 7.1.3 by downloading an updater. I still have files Sibelius713b77.exe and Sibelius713b77Update.exe but don’t remember which one I used — if indeed they are usable at all in this situation.

Thanks Mike. My computer is well defended and I have seen no other oddities, but I’ll run an extra scan. The file’s timestamp showed that the zero length file was substituted at the moment I attempted to run Sibelius.
I ran the 7.1.3 installer again. There seemed to be no repair option, but it reinstalled Sibelius and preserved my settings.

You are the second person I have come across this week who has reported a DLL file becoming zero length (other case on different forum, different application)
The prime suspects are:
(a) malware undetected by whatever malware protection you have;
(b) hardware about to fail: e.g. RAM or hard disk.

Sibelius 8.6/7.5.1/7.1.3/6.2/5.2.5, PhotoScore Ult 8.0.4, Dolet 6.6 for Sibelius, Windows 10 64-bit 16GB. Desktop no-name, Microsoft Surface Book.
Thanks Robin. I’m running a Windows Defender scan right now. I’ll see if it finds anything.
After reinstalling Sibelius 7.1.3 I ran it successfully (two instances, in fact) once. Then when I attempted to run it again the same thing happened, but this time three .dll files are missing (zero length): qtxmlpatterns4.dll (as before), and also qtnetwork4.dll and qtscript4.dll. I understand these are all parts of Visual C++. The timestamps on the zero files matched the time when I attempted to launch Sibelius.
As a matter of interest, what was the other application that showed this problem? I’ve just seen some reports of LibreOffice 5.4 having .dll trouble, though it runs fine for me.
I hope my hardware isn’t about to fail — my system is new as of last April!

This is curious: the fact that the problem recurs suggests that something systematic is going on.
Do you by any chance have the Microsoft add-on called "EMET" installed? If so, please uninstall it.
Could you confirm the Version number of Windows 10 that you are running? It should be a 4-digit number, such as "1703".

My Windows is restarted every morning, so yes, it has been restarted several times since then.
Edit: Another search (‘installed updates’) reveals that it was indeed 9 August. These updates were installed: KB4034658, KB4035631, and Security Update for Adobe Flash Player.

I'm not sure relying on Windows defender is a good idea in these days of malware and ransomware attacks. I would recommend getting something like Malwarebytes specifically to check for hidden threats. It is generally very well behaved and doesn't have a huge dragging effect on your speed.

McAfee does not report having detected or deleted anything yesterday.
It has only quarantined two items since I have been using this computer, both suspect email attachments.

I thought I had replied to the effect that Mcaffee caused all sorts of issues and that I now use AVG. I also recommended Malwarebytes but my post seems to have disappeared.

Whatever fit it was that took my Sibelius, requiring two reinstallations in two days, it now seems to have passed (touch wood!). Thanks to the people who tried to help.
