Upgrade or start from scratch
Posted by DJWolf - 16 Aug 02:54AM
Back in 2015 I bought Sebelius First 7.13 and upgraded to 7.5. I opened the program a couple of times before having a car accident that had me hospitalized and recovering for well over a year. Recently I tried launching the program only to get a BSOD each time I tried. Since I can't open the program I can't troubleshoot the problem and I wanted to upgrade to Sibelius 8 anyway.

However, if I upgrade from my current installation I fear I will retain whatever settings are causing the BSOD. If I start from scratch by deleting my current installation and ordering anew I have a better chance of getting a working program. Since I don't know my activation ID I can't get any technical support so I was wondering if anyone here could give me advice.

Thank you

Applications (such as Sibelius) cannot cause a BSOD. Device drivers (such as the driver for the sound card) can cause BSODs. Maybe you should fix your Windows installation and its device drivers.

Sibelius 8.x does not share any settings with earlier versions of Sibelius. When you install Sibelius 8.x you can choose whether or not to copy its initial settings from an earlier version.

There is no need to uninstall your existing installation: doing that does not remove its settings anyway.

Thank you for that Robin. There is nothing wrong with my current sound card settings. They run the windows sounds as well as point to the ASIO driver that both Kontakt 5 and Cakewalk use. The problem, I think, is that my Sibelius installation points to a sound card driver that is incompatible with my sound card. If I knew what it was called I could find it and delete it from my PC. And, the BSOD that occurs after the Sibelius engine loads prevents me from changing it from within the program.

I haven't looked at what my Avid Account allows yet. Can I re-download my Sibelius First 7.13? Would renewing my Support deal fix that? While upgrading to the top of the line is my end goal, my accident prevented me from even seeing what Sibelius even looks like or does. I'd really like to see if the program meets my needs before I spend more money on something I never got working in the first place.

As you are getting a BSOD I assume this is a PC running Windows.

You really do need manually to check whether your Realtek sound drivers are up to date, not assume they are just because things elsewhere seem to work.

DJWolf, you have not addressed the issue of Windows Device Drivers, and whether they are up to date or not. Please do the following:

- open Windows Device Manager;
- in Device Manager, pull down the View menu and select "Show hidden devices";
- expand the section "Sound, video and game controllers";
- copy back to us the name of every device listed EXCEPT the "Microsoft Streaming" ones, and whether its icon is black or greyed-out;
- for each device in that list in turn, double-click it, then click tab "Driver", and copy down the driver version number and driver date;
- now copy to us the list of names, driver version numbers and dates;
- then we can advise what needs to be done next.

Next:
- please tell us the version of Windows in use, and whether it is a 32-bit edition or a 64-bit edition;
- please tell us which audio output device on the PC you are using.

Next:
- click Start -> Avid -> "Sibelius 7 First User Data";
- in the folder that opens, open sub-folder "PlogueEngine";
- from folder "PlogueEngine", open the file "PlogueEngine_x64.log" into Notepad;
- in Notepad, Select All (Ctrl-A), then Copy (Ctrl-C);
- in your next post in this forum, Paste (Ctrl-V);
- the Paste will be very large: that is OK, do not truncate the information.

Thank you all for your help. I'm using Windows 7 on a pretty powerful desktop. I have a focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and that is connected to my mixing desk.

I actually solved the problem. I went into Control Panel/ programs and features with the intention of uninstalling Sibelius and re-installing it from disk only to notice that "repair" was an option. I repaired it and was able to launch Sibelius without a problem. Now, I have to figure out how to get all three instance of Kontakt 5 to appear in available devices. It is going to be a long learning curve.

But thanks again.
