glissando problem
Posted by KMichi - 19 Jul 09:02AM
Hello,

Since today, i have problems adjusting the glissando - symbol in right lenght and position. The whole last year it worked for me this way:
I added the glissando to the marked note, and than i could take it and put it in position, as well as take it on one of the sides, and make it longer/shorter.

Today it suddenly didn´t work. The Glissando - sign doesnt have this squares at the end, to adjust the length. As well the position was fixed vertical, and only in the highest or lowest position you could SOMEHOW adjust the length.
I have the same problem with trills and other glissando - styles...
When i open older projects, the glissando there is still as i knew it to be!

On the pics, i marked what i mean.

I have no idea, why it doesn´t work the way i did it the whole last year. Btw.: I just updated sibelius to the newest version, it still doesn´t work...

Any ideas? :S

Thanks,
Michael

If you have been using an earlier version of Sibelius, the recent 8.6 update made changes to the way glisses work. If this gliss was originally created in an earlier version, then it might be better to try again.

How did you enter the gliss? You should use Lines->Glissandi. I have just tried it on a new score and it works as it should. Clicking on the line brings up the handles and allows the ends to be moved freely.

If you have updated to Sibelius version 8.6, then please read the release notes for 8.6 on the correct way to enter the new magnetic glissandi.

Thank you, i read the release notes!
The notes quotes "If you wish to place a gliss line freely and independently of a note, you may do so by first deselecting anything you have selected (by pressing Escape) and then adding the line from the Lines menu".

Yes it works, the line is free. BUT i still cannot adjust the lenght of the line. Did i misunderstand something? A free line, i cannot adjust in lenght and direction doesn´t help me really much :S

Cheers,
Michi

I cannot reproduce your issue at all. Please attach a Sibelius .sib score file which demonstrates the issue, and please explain, step by step, how you created a gliss line that has no handles.

You should be able to create magnetic glisses in 8.6 by selecting the starting note and then clicking to get a handle and dragging the end of the line where you want it. So you should not really need a non magnetic gliss line in the situations shown in your screen shot.

If you really want to use non magnetic glisses between notes you will find it easier to install the downloadable plugin Line Between Notes, then selecting the 2 notes you are interested in glissing between and running the plugin.

I have not had the problem of having lines with no handles when creating a non magnetic gliss as you describe. But I have heard of problems like that, and it appears that importing one of the standard House Styles can often fix such scores. That might be worth a try.

Import as few properties as possible to avoid having the House Style change your layout in a radical way.

Ha! Partly solved! thx Bob Zawalich for the Tip.

I use the Font Jazz Inkpen2 in my score. When i change it to "Opus (Times)", it works as it should! So, this must be a bug!

So i guess, i do everything right, how i add the glissandi, because it works perfectly fine with an other font.

EDIT: Well, i tried around a bit. In a new score, it works as well with the new font. But only, when i start in another font, and than change it to the new one. So, pretty weird...

I added my score, where it still doesnt work. On the first Page i added 4 glissandi to the E-Piano. The first two, i added "freely", the second and third ones, i attached directly on the note.

There is something damaged or corrupt in the file "Finesse_for_Forum.sib", which is causing lines to have no handles at the ends.

I suggest that you should import one of the standard Sibelius House Styles into this score, such as House Style "Jazz Inkpen2".
