Hi folks,

I hope it is permissible to post a thread which is indirectly related to using Sibelius. If not, Moderators please feel free to remove this.

After one month of typing away in Sib., my damn wrists/fingers are starting to ache. I had tendinitis 20 years ago at college and it really messed me up for 6 months!; and so I don't want to risk it returning again.

Hence, I was looking on eBay for a solution and I wondered if any Sib. users use a wrist rest-pad, please? Most of them are under £10.00, with the very cheaper ranges being from non-UK parts of the globe.

Here is one which I thought looked OK for the job:

Many thanks in advance for any kind assistance offered here.

My recommendation: use a "vertical" mouse.

It cured my wrist-ache instantly and I have never had a recurrence. No need for a wrist-pad; the hand and forearm work in a more relaxed way.

Hi Chris,

Thanks a lot.

I don't use an external-mouse or external-keypad. I only ever use the 'qwerty' keyboard on my laptop PC.

Laptops are unavoidably bad for postural problems. I doubt that a wrist-rest can provide much relief for a laptop.

Robin,

But is working on a console/desktop PC any better than a laptop (for one's wrists)?

I use absolutely the same mousepad as Bob Morabito with wrist pad, Logitech K750 Solar keyboard and M705 Logitech Mouse. since I made this setup all pains were away. While working on a laptop when I am away from home, I still use an additional keyboard and have a very small portable mouse. For me the laptop keyboard is fine to type some text, but not to work in Sibelius.

I would recommend to take smth more stable than a pad with memory foam as I find these too soft and these don’t provide the neccesary support for me, but if you have had good experience with memory foam pads, then go for it. Just go to some computer mall and try one or another that are available there so that you can make a choice.

Welcome to the thread, Leo!

That's interesting. I do have a cheap MidiSport 3 x Octave keyboard - but I have just never used it! I have been doing 100% of my Sib. typing on the laptop's 'qwerty'.

That's a good idea to try the item out first in the shop. You can't really judge when just viewing online.

I maintain that a wrist support when using a computer mouse or keyboard is just as silly as a wrist support when playing piano. The answer is free movement and relaxation.

Similarly, my studio doesn't contain a chair with a backrest. You don't need 'support', you need to sit up straight. Much more comfortable in the long run.

Couple more suggestions:

1. Get a bluetooth keyboard with keys and separate keypad (the ergonomics of most laptops aren't great).

2. Consider a rising desk, or one of those laptop DJ stands so you can alternate sitting down / standing (good for your back and entire posture as well). I know several people who have this, both composers and people with an office job (lawyers), they love it.

3. Don't work too long at any one point in time, get up and walk around, exercise, exercise on the piano, etc. A lot of RSI related issues are caused by sitting for too long in the same position.

4. You might also consider light physical exercises (stress ball, or light weights, etc.). That also helps avoid any other issues such as back pain, etc.

Like Leo, I also use the Logitech K750 Solar keyboard and Logitech Wireless Trackball M570 and love them. No wires, no batteries for the keyboard......even dim room light seems to be enough to keep it charged. AND......my most recent and beloved studio change......an adjustable standing desk and Uplift Motion Stool, both from Human Solutions, beautifully made and at a fraction of most other companies' prices. My back and my energy have improved SO much with this change. The stool is awesome, but I rarely need to use it. I stand on a gel type mat which came with the desk. And I try to follow Peter's suggestion of moving around and taking breaks.

Hi Peter,

I never thought of a Bluetooth keyboard before. I take it you mean a qwerty one? My laptop has Bluetooth connection. But I am not sure how these significantly reduce one's chances of contracting RSI because they are still a keyboard and a keypad! But I think you may mean the 'action/response' is more forgiving?

There is definitely tension in my hands and wrists because I am a bit stressed when trying to suss out Sibelius whilst trying to attain the high standard of musicality I strive for. But also, I am relatively new to computers and I feel the whole experience is tasking on my body and eyesight. My eyesight really seems to get worse after a session in Sib. Last week, I could hardly cross the road because the traffic looked blurry, quite truthfully!

I need to get back into ten minutes per day of Alexander Technique. I can't play keyboards very well sitting down so I usually play standing up - unless it's a duo gig where I am on bass-pedals. Hands, back, neck - they have all took a beating over the years (never mind my liver!!).

Hi Laurence,

I actually feel like the issue is because my wrists are unsupported. Like they feel as though I have been holding them up in the air for hours. And if they had something to rest on then this would take away the strain. That's how I feel - but I have never tested one if those products before.

Just to put the other side of the picture: I have never had any problems using computer keyboards and standard mice (and in the past that included plenty of 12-hour days doing nothing else), except on one occasion ...

and that was when I had to use somebody else's PC which had a (very expensive and fancy-looking) wrist support device "permanently" attached to the keyboard. The thing just got in the way of my "normal" hand position, and the aches started within half an hour!

But it might be worth saying that being a keyboard player, I don't usually rest any part of my hand or arm on anything when using a computer keyboard or mouse, except for my fingers - certainly not to support any weight, even if my wrist happens to touch the desk occasionally.

The upper arm muscles are quite capable of supporting your arm for 24 hours a day 365 days a year without causing any problem - after all, that's what they evolved to do thousands of years "before computers!"

Hi Paul:

the picture thing doesn't seem to work but it's one of these.

Inexpensive, and easy to use (plug and play). It's also a solution in case you dropped liquid over your keyboard and ruined several keys (as I did a while ago, before replacing the keyboard).

Cheers Peter,

Are Logitech a good brand - I always thought they were a bit cheap and nasty?; but admittedly I have never actually tried any of their range. I have always paid a bit more and gone for a higher brand where possible (if it's something I am going to be using all the time); you know the saying: "if you buy cheap, you buy twice!" Though if you say it's good then I am not going to doubt you.

However, I am still a bit puzzled as to how an external keyboard and mouse save on muscle-strain? Unless you mean you place the Logitech on you lap/knee and type from there?

Best,

Paul

Keyboards are more or less utility items these days, unless you're a touch-typist inputting huge amounts of text. But I always say - use wireless if you must but use a cable if you can. You've got to be sitting in front of the screen. Are wired mouse and keyboard THAT much of an inconvenience?

The only mice I really can't get on with are the ultra-small ones.

Laurence,

As I say, I have never even used a mouse before; just the touch-pad on my laptop.

I don't know if - to me - it would make an appreciable amount of difference if the keyboard was wireless or not? Maybe Peter means it has more flexibility in terms of positioning/angling it? Same for external numeric-keypad.

Thanks.

Here's a picture of my DAW setup which might explain it better than I can put in words.

The Sibelius laptop is kind of wedged in between midi keyboards, mixing consoles, and speakers, so there's not too much wiggle room.

The bluetooth keyboard and mouse helps in providing a bit of additional flexibility. You could always have wired mouses / keyboards but there's so many wires already, for something this simple I kind of like the bluetooth version.

Dropbox link with pictures:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/udofquqyor8orez/AAByOKoIKKUq-o6hWdI7vsdCa?dl=0

These are high resolution pictures, it'll take a while to upload them, and for you to download them -- please be patient.

Hi Rob,

Thanks.

I have just been looking at how I actually type/rest my hands/arms when using Sibelius.

(please see screenshot - my 'rap' Artist tattoos are on my other arm!).

As you can see, my upper forearms are resting directly on the edge of a wooden-desk - which is uncomfortable. Then I type away with my fingers in the air above the qwerty keyboard (btw - I can't type and so it's all 1 or 2 fingered - ie. L/R indexes). About 25% of the type my wrists may rest on the lower section of the laptop, but mostly they are up in the air.

Gotta sign off as my hands are hurting!!!

Best,

Paul

That's not surprising, since it's cutting off the blood circulation by putting pressure on the main vein in your arm, as well as putting pressure on the tendons in your arm which actually operate your wrist and fingers.

The fix for that "bad habit" is very easy. Just move the keyboard closer to the edge of the desk so there is nothing for your forearm to rest on!

Resting the heel of your palm on the desk if you need some support is much less problematic - though it may create calluses (painless, but not pretty to look at) if you do it for long periods.

Hi Rob,

So literally just move the laptop much closer to the edge of the desk? I think this will stop me hunching forward as well.

Maybe try one of those wrist-supports as well? - which a few people don't like!

If you don't want strain, play the keys as you would a piano, without dropping the wrist. I don't think gadgets help.

If you use a wrist support to actually support your wrist (by putting some weight on it), again you are blocking the blood circulation. You can probably see some of the veins on the inside of your wrist, unless they are hidden by a layer of fat(!) If those veins are resting on a support, they aren't doing what they are meant to do and your hand will tend to "go to sleep" through lack of circulation.

The main tendons that move your fingers all go through the same part of your wrist as well - the "finger muscles" are in your arm, not in your hand!

Hi Paul:

See public dropbox link above. You might want to edit your previous post, or web crawlers will see your email address and you risk getting a lot of spam.

Cheers,
Peter

Peter,

That's a high-end set-up you got going there! I might out-trump you on the analog synths but you are way ahead of me on all the other stuff. It looks like you have a monitor screen for every wall!

I will have a try this week with moving the laptop and raising my wrists. If there is no improvement then I will have to look at the other options. If I carry on as I am then my RSI will be back before the end of the month.

Thanks,

Paul

Pilotone,

I tried hooking up my midi-controller today and I found the inputting of notes to be quite messy. Having said that, I may be fine for yourself.

You still have to have one-hand on the qwerty to change various parameters as you go along, or else 'click' on things, etc.

Also, moving the laptop close to the edge of the desk (so that my arms are raised all of the time) seems to be less achy than where I had it placed before. So that's an improvement.

I have started taking longer breaks. I type for 5 x minutes and then take 55 x minutes off ;-)

Paul
