My 6 penneth worth.
1. Yes, but only if the singer has good ear`oles.

Otherwise 2. 2 sounds much more logical that 3 which sounds quite angular and `suddenly` strange.

I thank you . . . . .

Neither. Use an F7 on beat 3.

Like Tony, I think I'd go for option 2. Even though the entire progression isn't played, I still hear (or my brain 'hears') the logic of Gm7 to C7 being the last half of a I, VI, IIm7, V7 progression.

Incidentally and possibly worthless, but having played a few piano introductions, I'd play an entire I, VI, IIm7, V7 progression, which leaves no room for doubt

Cheers,
Dave

Thank you, Tony & Dave. Yes, the ii7, V7 option sounds safest to me too, yet iii7, VI7 seems most logical since the song doesn't start on the tonic chord. I would certainly use the latter for a turnaround going back to ii.

Terry, I'm not sure I understand your preference for F7.

I'd much prefer to give him the key without actually pre-empting his note. I've rarely had to explain that a dominant bell note isn't the *actual* note the singer starts on (though if they start over-thinking it, problems can be found). If this is to be a string arrangement, an inverted dominant pedal could be effective over quite a few bars. Or here's some other ideas which set the bearings without taking the impact of that first note away from the singer,

I should explain that this is a transcription from a Barry Manilow big band recording in which the singer picks up alone and then accompanied only by piano. My client is worried about getting his first note right, and I have promised him that the pianist will help him with this. But he wants to hear a piano tinkle on the playback I have sent him. So I'm trying to avoid writing an epic MGM intro and find the least fussy cue that will help the singer. This is not straight forward as the song starts on the supertonic (ii) chord. A dominant (V) bell is not very helpful as the vocal pickup starts on the mediant (III).

Definitely the third option. Mel Tormé would have loved this opening.

Yes, Snaps, I wholeheartedly agree, but Mel was a skilled musician, composer and harmony-smith, rather than just a band singer. But for the average vocalist, I feel I need to dumb down a little. At least #2 gives best indication of the key, if not the first chord of the song.

Not that my opinion is worth anything, but I'd go for the 2nd option. The third seems harmonically weaker with the repeated D9-/Gm7 pattern

Your opinion is worth a lot to me, Philip. I'm using #2 for safety's sake, and the client is happy with it.
