Full Score Instrument Braces (help?)
Posted by monsterjazzlicks - 23 Jun 07:57PM (edited 23 Jun 08:06PM)
Hi folks,

Please see attached Sib. file (thanks!) and/or PNG for: "Little Blue Frog" (Miles).

As you can see, Sib. braces (I think that's the correct term?) the 2 x woodwinds together, leaving the brass separate. While this is correct when writing for Big Band, I wondered if it would be permissible to have all three 'horn' parts braced together. please?

So, instead of Sibelius's default scheme, have the Trumpet/Sax/Clari all braced together? This would (I feel) make it easy-on-the-eye because you could instantly see they are a (3-part) section; instead of a 'two' and a 'one'.

Many thanks in advance for any kind assistance offered here.

Best,

You can simply click on the top end of the bracket with your mouse and drag it up to include the trumpet part. This certainly can easily be done, or were you asking whether it is "accepted" practice?

Many thanks Luis!

A bit of both really. It's something that I had not done before and also I wanted to check if it was accepted practice.

So you call it a 'bracket'?

Paul

Brackets are square. Braces are squiggly (as for piano staves). You can also pull barlines across in the same way to combine your "horn" (jazzspeak for blowers) section.

Cheers Adrian,

Yes, I was was aware what the piano 'squiggles' looked liked, but was not sure exactly sure of their technical name.

"Brace" yourself, Paul. I call them squiggly brackets.

Adrian,

I am afraid I am not quite sure what you mean?, thanks.

Hi guys,

Same score but a slightly different question if you don't mind, please:

Do you think the key-sig and repeat-bar marking looks somewhat squashed together? This seems to be how Sib. places everything (in 'Jazz Ink', at least) by 'default' (ie. the 'F#' and the left-hand-side of the thick bar-line)?

See screenshot...

Thanks a lot.

Paul

That spacing appears to be fixed in 8.6 after a "Reset Note Spacing".

Cheers Robin,

Do you mean, please, that Sib. should have made the correction 'automatically, or that I have to 'manually' select the bar/notation and apply one of the Tab parameters?

See screenshot.

As far as I am aware I have the latest Sib. version ('8.6' was circa 100MB d/l).

Thanks,

Paul

Hi,

I just double-checked and I am definitely on 'v.8.6'.

Thanks,

Paul
