Sib. 7.5: Pizzicato Woes
Posted by Pilotone Music - 21 Jun 11:14PM
I've tried for hours to figure out why I can't get strings to play pizzicato. This has gone on for months, but it hasn't been a dire necessity until today to play back a mockup. It used to work automatically when called for in Technique, but no longer. I just started using NotePerformer, which I LOVE, but the problem started months ago, so can't blame NotePerfomer. I've looked at every possible relevant thing in the Reference Guide, including the Playback Dictionary, but no luck. Changing instruments doesn't help either. What might I be overlooking?? Thanks so much! Beth

Please attach a sib file that demonstrates the problem.

The word "pizz" or "Pizz" is missing from your playback dictionary. Also 'Case sensitive' is checked on "arco", so "Arco" doesn't work either. Also, I presume the 'cello should return to arco in measure 9. Edited version attached in sib.7 format.

Beth, there was definitely no pizz. or pizzicato definition in the dictionary. When I added one, it worked as expected. Did you import a house style from somewhere else? You can either add them manually or import a standard housestyle which will put it back in, but you will lose your changes to the text styles

Thank you, Adrian. Thank you, Mike. I immediately added "pizz" to the Playback Dictionary (no idea why it wasn't there and why "case sensitive" was there by default. No, I don't think I imported a house style from elsewhere. Anyway, for some reason, I STILL get no pizz sound despite the addition to the Dictionary (in the Staff page). But I started a new score as an experiment and pizz worked fine there! So what silly thing might I be doing, or not doing?

Did the pizz work in my edited score. It did before I posted it. OK, so you've added "pizz" or "Pizz" to your playback dictionary, but have you checked Effect (Sound ID change) and Sound ID (+pizzicato) and Case Sensitive (uncheck)?

Oh at last! My beloved pizzicato is back. Thank you SO much Adrian, Mike and Laurence! I've apparently got a bit to learn still about the Playback Dictionary. Adding "+pizzicato" to Effect Value did the trick. And yes Adrian, pizz certainly played back in your edited score.

Yes, there's no point in adding a term to the Dictionary unless you also add what it DOES! You could theoretically create a Dictionary where 'p' caused loud playing, 'f' caused soft. Where a tenuto line caused staccato.. etc.
