Sib. 7.1.3: Should I upgrade from 7.1.3 ?
Posted by Muffinman - 17 Jun 07:50AM
Hi all,

I saw that Avid is discounting upgrades at the moment and was wondering if it is worth upgrading to Sib 8. from 7.1.3

From what I've read, very little has changed other than 'touch screen' accessibility and perhaps a couple of tiny little additions, like the magnetic gliss thing.... handy for sure, but not a deal breaker.

Should I save my money?

I've had 8.5.1 and I now have 8.6, but I'm still using 7.1.3 because I find the upgrades unusable due to broken functions. I don't know what price you have been offered but I'm sure you will be disappointed.

There are reasons to upgrade - if you have clients with the latest versions, for example, so you need to be able to read their files.

Apart from that, it seems difficult to recommend an upgrade, unless any specific newer features are important to you. 7.1.3 was a good stable version, it does all I need and it's one I cannot see I will ever move on from.

There is of course the other up-and-coming program which, in the view of some, will soon leave Sibelius well and truly behind. There is a half-price cross-grade offer to that which is due to expire soon*.

Edit: *End of this month (June). There may or may not be further offers, but everyone is being tight-lipped.

Thanks for your input.

Yes I couldn't see any advantage in the upgrade. I've been watching the progress of the new software. I'll be looking into it once it becomes a full system.

Clients who do use the latest version can always save as an older version (I presume), so there's no advantage in that regard that I can see.

Avid certainly dropped the ball on what could have been great, progressive product.

For information, please, what is the highest version of Sibelius that can run on a 32 bit computer. I have only one of these, my several others at various locations are 32 bit, as are those of most of my colleagues, so we cannot share Sib 8 files.

I meant, of course, that I only have one 64 bit computer.
