I'm writing a vocal piece and want to indicate the portamento to and from the grace note, note the default next major note. I've tried to do this with and without the default magnetic turned /off.

So what is going wrong? Can you post a score that shows what it is that you don't like?

You need to pull your grace note left to make room, then apply the plug-in 'Line between notes'. Be careful not to re-space notes afterwards.
