Sib. 7.1.3: Spacing guitar chord, lyrics and notes
Posted by jobaker - 21 May 01:58PM
Sometime when lyrics are entered, there is not enough room with the note. Same thing happens with guitar chord. Is there a way of spacing the notes after entering lyrics or chords so it automatically spaces the notes so that everything fits? Right now I am doing it manually, which is a pain! Thank you

Select everything with a passage selection (pale blue box), then do "Reset Note Spacing" (Ctrl-Shift-N on Windows).

Don't bother doing manual adjustments for this sort of thing: Sibelius provides you with the tools you need to do it automatically.

Thanks. That corrected a lot of chords but not all of them. I tried to do it a few times.

For lyrics, also try making the settings indicated in my screenshot. THEN Reset Note Spacing. Consider a slightly smaller font size for Lyrics Text. And don't have any restrictive Bars per Line setting in Auto Breaks. Maybe 4 bars won't FIT on a line. As so often in notation layout, it's a balancing act.

Thanks. I have changed the note spacing to one and will try it next time I'm entering a new song with words.

But here's the bass line with chord symbols that I couldn't get Ctrl-Shift-N to space them all.

There are multiple issues with this score: possibly too many to find and debug remotely.

First: there are some plain errors:
Bar 90: two chord symbols attached to the same note;
Bar 121: second chord has been dragged away from its natural attachment point;
... and so on.

Second: there are instances where chord symbols are attached to a time-point in the staff which is neither a note nor a rest. Sibelius will NOT be able to space these chord-symbols correctly when you do "Reset Note Spacing".
For instance:
Bar 111: final chord is floating;
Bar 90: first chord;
Bar 91: second chord;
Bar 123: third chord
Bar 124: second and third chords
Bar 127: second chord;
Bar 128: third chord;
... and so on.

In Sibelius, for reset-spacing to work, all chord symbols must be attached either to a note or to a rest, and they should be at their default attachment position, not dragged away from it before the "Reset Note Spacing"

Good luck!

Edit:
1. if you really want to attach a chord symbol to a time-point which is neither a note nor a rest, then create a bar-ful of rests in another "voice", and hide the new rests. Sibelius will then space the chord-symbols correctly if attached to the hidden rests;
2. If, after "Reset note spacing", you have trouble with the first chord-symbol of a bar overlapping the last chord-symbol of the previous bar, then select the note or rest to which the offending chord-symbol is attached and then nudge it to the right with Alt-Shift-rightarrow until the overlap clears.

What is this bass part FOR? The bass player in this song has a very specific part to play, he doesn't need the chords, certainly not in such detail. I can't see the chords being much use to a guitarist either.
