NotePerformer 2.0.2
Posted by Greg Jones - 20 Apr 07:37AM (edited 20 Apr 07:38AM)
Heads up. Wallander has released an updated version of NotePerformer. This time, it's 2.0.2.

Here are the features included in this update:

* Multiple bug fixes for choirs, including the strange vibrato (shake) occuring when using the general "Choir" staff as well as issues in general with rough timbre and transitions. There's now also a general "Choir" sound dedicated for the staff type.
Drum set sounds are now selected automatically also for other staff types than the "jazz" kit (excluding the "Rock" kit staff).
* CPU spike occuring when doing a roll on a staff with "let ring" has been fixed.
* Piano dynamic range has been tweaked, making ppp slightly softer than before, for higher notes.
* Organ dynamic range was increased somewhat.
* Various small improvements that don't affect playback.
* New feature: Vibrato Speed MIDI CC #106. It's now possible to override the target vibrato speed for an instrument (please see documentation on MIDI controllers before using).
* New feature: Pop attacks flag MIDI CC #107. This experimental flag is intended to improve playback of non-classical music (please see documentation on MIDI controllers before using).

Bravo to Arne Wallander for providing tremendously nuanced control over vibrato in NotePerformer 2.0.2. If you don't need to use it, the feature is not in your way, but if you want to vary vibrato, you now have precise controls using Sibelius' MIDI CC controller numbers.

I've tested the new ability to vary the rate of vibrato (using the Solo Cello) and it's quite impressive.

I have attached a Sibelius 7.5 document which demonstrates this. Having NotePerformer 2.0.2 installed is required, of course.

The point is that NotePerformer 2.0 gave us the new ability to specify the depth or intensity of the vibrato in 128 increments, while the rate or speed of the vibrato remained the same. Now 2.0.2 gives us the additional ability to also specify the rate or speed of the vibrato in 128 increments. This should work with all instruments that naturally use vibrato to begin with (eg not on piano). I have only tested the solo cello so far.

The thing about NotePerformer that has always been outstanding for me is that it has always provided a setting for strings and winds with no vibrato at all, using the "non vib" text expression. Sibelius' own built-in sound library does not have a "no vibrato" version for instruments that use vibrato. While "non vib" audio playback is not something you would expect in modern orchestral music, it's really useful for early music (Renaissance, Baroque) to more closely approximate the timbre and the way that instruments are played in those historical styles.

When doing the download I noticed that there was a version 2.0.1 that I don't remember seeing. Anybody know anything about it? I decided to download both just in case 2.0.2 isn't to my liking. (2.0.0 had a few ragged edges.)

An interesting demo of the full range possible. Which also demonstrates that the effect is probably best when used very sparingly!
