Sib. 7.5: Circled Noteheads and Chords
Posted by LeoP - 16 Apr 06:25PM
Hi all!

I am working on a project now where I desparately need circles around single noteheads and chords. It’s not a problem at all with single noteheads where I created a new notehead combined with a symbol, but as soon as it comes to chords it becomes difficult as I cannot draw shapes in Sib. What would be the best workaround? The enclosed example was made in SCORE4, so I need something of the kind...

Unfortunately the great Plug-in created by Bob Zalwach works only with TAB lines...

Export the Sibelius file to PDF, then import the PDF into Adobe Illustrator, and add the ellipses there.

Or the other way around, install Inkscape, create your desired circle, ellipse etc. and import that SVG into Sibelius as graphic. You can still make adjustments to the horizontal or vertical stretch on this graphic in Sibelius by stretching the graphic with its handles.
SVGs can also be used when building new symbols.

Thanks Robin and Kai. The way Kai described it is the best one due to the fact that I have to extract parts and with Illustrator I would have to make everything twice in the score and the parts... Would be great if Sibelius Team would add an ellipse to the lines as they did with the Box...

I have attached a score (Sib 7 format) that contains a circle and a couple of ellipses as SVG graphics. Magnetic Layout is off for these graphics.

One approach would be to have this score available and just copy and paste from it. If I were doing it seriously I would probably make up a bunch of copies with the graphics scaled to different sizes and proportions, so I could copy appropriately sized circles/ellipses based on my context.

Graphics are handy because of their resizability. It might be worth considering, though, making up sets of symbols using such graphics (though I think you will need to set up the sizes in Inkscape or whatever you are using before importing to Sibelius).

The fixed size of symbols is in some way a disadvantage, but if you have a full set you can move the right one to its context and not have to worry about accidentally dragging it. Symbols like that adapt to changing staff sizes, so I found that if you can figure out how many lines high they need to be, and possibly have different ones for chords that have 2nds and this adjacent notes, you can set up a reasonable set of symbols that could be exported to a House Style or you could made up a data file to copy from.

Sib 7 introduced a lot of power in how it handles graphics.

Thank you Bob. I have already created a bunch of SVG graphics, but yours are more presize. It is really great help!!! Thank you!
