I'm writing orchestral music, and don't really understand how to get the best playback from the unpitched percussion. For example I always want to have the orchestral bass drum, but often get the sound of a bass drum from a drum kit. And I also like to have the sound of a suspended cymbal instead of the one of pair cymbals. How do I set this up correctly?
I would be grateful for help with this.

I just realised that I only have this problem when working on old scores. Can anyone explain why it is so?

Maybe your old scores opens up with General Midi sound configuration selected?

Can you attach a score? Or part of it?
