Sib. 7.5: Where did tabloid go?
Posted by Ed Wentz - 15 Mar 11:21PM
Due to a computer crash and a re-install download to my new computer, I can't find "tabloid" in the print-page setup like I did. I used to print two pages of a trombone song for example set up on letter size, portrait, then go to print and page setup and select tabloid then select print 2 pages per sheet and the printer would spit out a 11X17 sheet with the first page on the left and the second on the right. Why can't I find tabloid. All I see is envelopes, Japanese sizes, postcards, A4, A5, A6, etc. No tabloid like I had before this latest download to my new computer. THanks so much.

Is this on Windows or on Mac OS?

On the new computer, have you installed the appropriate device driver for the model of printer that you are using?

The list of available paper sizes is a function of the operating system and the printer driver, not of Sibelius.

Thanks so much. I am running Windows 10. I did use my new wide format HP 76102 install disk. I tried going to files, and tried both European and U.S. and I still end up the page setup at the bottom with "statement" and no of the others below that on my laptop install including "tabloid". Any more help for me?

Ed, please attach screen-shots of the following:

1. The Sibelius "Print" dialogue, showing all the settings from top to bottom;
2. Then, click the link "Printer Properties" towards the top of the Sibelius Print dialogue, and take screen-shots of each tab of the Printer Document Properties dialogue (especially the Advanced tab).

You can use the Windows "Snipping Tool" to take screen-shots of defined areas of the display.

Attach all the screen-shots to you next post. You can attach multiple attachments by "Edit"ing your post after first posting it.

Besides the attachment when I opened page setup to try to get a screen shot to show you what my selections are it disappeared and I couldn't get that shot. I don't know if this shows you enough for some help.

When you go to the Print dialogue, was the "HP Officejet 7610 Series Class Driver" already selected, or did you have to make that selection in the Sibelius Print dialogue?

It was already there. I even went to HP help and did what they suggested (unplug printer, unplug power cord, wait 60 seconds, plug in power cord, plug in printer, let it go through its check, try to print. I still can't find tabloid anywhere on the" page setup" "size" list. In control panel clicking on devices and printers, clicking on "print server properties" I find 11 X 17 4th on the list after 10 X 11 is first and scrolling all the way to the bottom after a choice of "statement" I find next "super A, then super B then super B then tabloid, then tabloid extra, and finally US standard fanfold. If I click on tabloid the choice is to click yes but still nothing happens, and another choice is "apply" which is not highlighted no matter what I do so that doesn't work. Thanks so much again. I hope we are getting closer to a solution.

Please attach the previously requested screen-shots of each tab of the "Printer Properties" panels (not the "Page Setup"), as described above.

What you are describing for the "Page Setup" behaviour in Sibelius is normal for a printer which is capable of printing only up to "Letter" size. So we need to figure out why you are seeing this for what you thought was a large-format printer. That's why we need to see the "Printer Properties" to see if there is a reason why it is behaving like a "Letter" size printer.

As you can see in the screen-shot you attached, the 7610 is configured to use "Letter" size paper. You should change that setting to the size of the paper that you are using: Tabloid, presumably, and click OK. It is possible that Sibelius will not immediately pick up the change of paper size until after you exit the Print dialogue back to the score, and then go back into the Print dialogue again.

Re: Sib. 7.5: Where did tabloid go?

That didn't work. The same Sibelius program with the same 7612 printer worked like a champ. Again, I would have two letter size pages in front of me on the main screen, ie: trombone 1. I would go to file, print, where page one of that part would be. I go to page setup, size, scroll down to the bottom where tabloid 11 X 17plain, and tabloid brochure were listed, select tabloid plain, click OK, go to normal and click that and select 2 pages to one and the screen would show both trombone page 1 and 2 side by side on a landscape 11 X17 sheet. Sometimes because the top of the title of the piece would be slightly distorted I would click on fit to screen and reduce the size to 95%. Click print and out it would come....perfect! Why doesn't that tabloid choice show at the bottom of all the sizes to select in page setup in the print screen?

In addition, when I just tried your suggestion the two pages looked full on the print screen but printed out very small and would fit on a letter size piece of paper.

> Why doesn't that tabloid choice show at the bottom of all the sizes to select in page setup in the print screen?

Probably because the printer paper size is set to "Letter" in the printer driver.

Please attach screen-shots of the tabs of the "Printer Properties" dialogue that you have not yet shown us. So far, you have shown us only the "Advanced" tab, twice. Please show us every tab.

Please verify that the "Paper Size" setting in "Printer Properties" is now set at "Tabloid".

If I understand what you're asking when I go to file, print, and open printer properties, advanced, letter shows up and when I click that a long list of sizes comes up....none of which are tabloid or 11 X 17! The bottom choices are legal, letter, a Japanese choice and statement!

Re: Sib. 7.5: Where did tabloid go?

After more research:

The screen-shots reveal that you are using the wrong driver for this printer. The driver you are using is "HP Officejet 7610 Series Class Driver". This is a driver supplied by Microsoft as part of Windows 10, and this "Class Driver" cannot print on wide-format paper: it is for Letter/A4 only.

To be able to print on Tabloid or A3, you need to use the printer drivers supplied by HP on the installation disk. The correct drivers are called "HP Officejet 7610 Series" instead of "HP Officejet 7610 Series Class Driver".

Please re-configure Windows so that your printer uses the printer driver called "HP Officejet 7610 Series", and then make sure that Sibelius is using this driver for this printer, and only then try printing from Sibelius.

I hope we are finally getting somewhere. I appreciate your help and I'll try not to get more frustrated. So, to try to fix this problem what do I do? Do I have to delete all drivers, uninstall the whole printer, re-install? I put the install print disk in and clicked on "drivers" and I found two choices: Fax and Scanner. I don't use the Fax function at all. Under "scanner" I found a choice of 32 or 64. Clicking on 64 gave me 3 more choices. Please tell me the basics of what to do and good instructions on how I get there screen by screen. On my old laptop I opened Sibelius went to file/ print and there sits "HP Officejet 7610 Series (network) and that's what I need to see on my new computer so you are correct in what you say.

Re: Sib. 7.5: Where did tabloid go?
Posted by Robin Walker - 18 Mar 04:25PM
What happens next depends on whether you have already installed the HP printer drivers from the installation disk.

To check that:
- in control panel "Devices and Printers", right-click on "HP Officejet 7610 Series Class Driver (network)" and select "Printer Properties";
- in "Properties", select tab "Advanced";
- in "Advanced", click button "New Driver";
- in "Add Printer Device Wizard", click "Next";
- in the left-hand column, scroll down to "HP" and select "HP";
- in the right-hand column, scroll down to "HP Officejet 7610";
- at this location, there will be at least "HP Officejet 7610 Series Class Driver" listed, but the question is to see whether, adjacent to it, there is another entry simply "HP Officejet 7610 Series";
- if the entry simply "HP Officejet 7610 Series" exists, then select it and click "Next", then follow instructions for the remainder of the driver installation: after that, your printer will print to Tabloid/A3;
- if the entry called simply "HP Officejet 7610 Series" does not exist, then you need to "Cancel" out of the wizard, and run the HP Installation Disk for the 7610.

Since I do not have that installation disk, for further help, you will need to refer to the HP "Getting Started" and "User Guide" publications that came with the printer.

When you have installed the printer drivers from the disk, then you should find a new printer icon in "Devices and Printers". You should right-click the new 7610 printer, and select "Set as default printer".

Then when you print from Sibelius, the new printer with the new printer driver should be automatically pre-selected in the print dialogue, and you should be able to use "Page Setup" with "Tabloid".

Unless you need to be able to use the scanner or the fax, you do not need to also install any fax or scanner drivers. If you need to install scanner drivers, and you cannot figure out what options to choose, then you will have to show us screen-shots of the options, as we do not have the software that you are using.

Robin,

After 3 tries I was unsuccessful and when hitting cancel it took over 15 minutes to shut off whatever it was doing. I had to run errands and just now returned and tried again, but, I decided to shut down both Defender and McAfee to see if that made any difference. I followed your instructions above to a tee and Hooray, you have been a genius for me. Tabloid is now in my list and big instrumental parts came out of the printer perfectly. So, again, thank you so much for all your patience and assistance. If there is any survey or something I can submit in your behalf I would be happy to give you 5 stars! Thanks again,

I didn't think Defender would work if another AV program was running in real time. I have Avast, and Defender is automatically disabled.

But I agree it's unwise even when possible.

And yes, Robin is amazingly helpful on this forum. His knowledge of Sibelius and wider computer issues is vast and he must spend a lot of time reading posts and writing responses. His tenacity in the face of sometimes less than ideal reactions from those he's trying to help is amazing. (I offer no criticisms of anybody. Some of us are not clued-up when it comes to dealing with computers.)

Big vote of thanks to Robin Walker.

Re: Sib. 7.5: Where did tabloid go?

The McAfee that is bundled as "bloatware" on some new PCs is just a ploy to suck you in to paying McAfee a regular renewal subscription. McAfee pay the PC maker to pre-load McAfee software, in the expectation that they will profit from user subscriptions in the long run. If McAfee had not been pre-loaded, would you have felt motivated to go into the market and purchase McAfee yourself, unprompted? If you can answer "yes", then you should be happy to start paying the regular renewal subscriptions for McAfee.

The built-in Microsoft anti-malware in Windows 10 (which they now call Defender) is free of charge, better than many people give it credit for, and is not the same as what was called Windows Defender in earlier versions of Windows (the earlier Defender had a strictly limited feature-set). The Windows 10 Defender incorporates some of the generic defences to malware techniques formerly provided by the EMET (Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit) add-on in earlier versions of Windows, and, after the imminent Windows 10 "Creators" update, will have even more such generic defences built-in. Such generic defences directly catch many malicious programming techniques at the time of execution, and do not rely on recognising the signatures of files previously classified as malicious (although Defender checks for those signatures as well). So these generic defences ought to be capable of stopping some attacks from new files, not previously classified as malicious: the so-called "zero-day" attacks.

Microsoft realised some time ago that they could not rely completely on third-parties to defend the Windows ecosystem against malicious attacks: they had to do something themselves to harden Windows against malicious software. Microsoft are limited in what they can do by legislation designed to promote competition, so they can only offer Defender as a user-choice, much the same as Internet Explorer, or Edge, in the European Union, can only be offered as a user-choice.

Yes. Many users have suffered higher-than-necessary vulnerability because companies such as McAfee got courts to agree that an effective anti-virus function built into Windows was unfair competition. Funny old world, isn't it!
