Perhaps this is the wrong forum for this question; however, so far I have not received any useful help from the Neuratron people. I do not write music. I only use PhotoScore to input music into Sibelius. I have been using PhotoScore Lite 6 that came with my copy of Sibelius. It worked fine, but was cumbersome because it did not recognize 4 voices. I downloaded the PhotoScore Ultimate 8 demo version and it worked fine, so I decided to purchase the full Ultimate 8 version.
I tried reading the same pdf file that worked in PhotoScore Lite 6 and the Ultimate 8 demo. The result is a mess. See attached file.
What is going on??????????????
If this program will not work on my system, I hope they will refund my money. I will not hold my breath.
PS. Even though I have the boxed check to get email notifications of replies to my posts, I never get them.

Much depends upon:
1. the original resolution of the scanning process which resulted in the initial production of the PDF;
2. what you told PhotoScore when it asked what was the resolution of the PDF.
From the attached picture, the original scan appears to be poor, with the clef cut off at the left margin and apparent gaps in the staff lines.
The picture also reveals that the PhotoScore-specific fonts are missing, and they could have been destroyed, for instance, by uninstalling PhotoScore Lite.
I recommend that you re-install PhotoScore Ultimate 8 now, so as to restore the missing fonts, then try again.

Most of the errors refer to the first bar of each scanned system, and looking at the display I can see why. Are you sure THIS actual scan worked better in Lite and the demo?
Apart from that, the score seems to have been read successfully, but the fon't required to display it have gone missing. Doubtless for the reason Robin suggested.
I think recent versions of Photoscore have stopped asking about resolution. Presumably they attempt to auto-detect. I'm not sure this is an improvement.
Thanks to Robin and Laurence for your responses. I really appreciate your help.
To answer your questions.
Laurence: Yes, this very same PDF file worked just fine with PS Ultimate 8 Demo and PS Lite 6 that came with my Sibelius 6.2. This is a repeatable result using all three versions using the same PDF file.
Robin: I tried all three resolutions with the same result. The image on the left is NOT cut off in the original PDF. It was scanned in with Grayscale. The left side of the original PDF shows some light leakage from the scanning; however, PS Ultimate 8 Demo, PS Ultimate 8 and PS Lite 6 all convert to black and white. But this cannot be the ultimate problem because the very same PDF file works just fine with PS Ultimate 8 Demo and PS Lite 6. So, at this point I don't see an advantage to PS Ultimate 8 over PS Lite 6, discounting the voice issue. I would like to have the four voices; however, not at the expense of poor PDF reading.
Note: I reinstalled PS Lite 6 and noticed that it reinstalled some of the Ghostscript files. Then I reinstalled PS Ultimate 8. It appeared to read the file previously discussed above just fine. Contrary to their installation instructions to remove all previous versions, removal of PS Lite is a bad idea because of the Ghostscript issue. I thought this fixed my problem; however, I tried reading another PDF and got the result attached to this reply. So the problem is NOT fixed. Therefore, I find PS Ultimate 8 less useful than PS Lite 6 at this point in time.
I have yet to hear from Neuratron. If I get anything useful, I will post here.
Again, why am I not getting email notices of responses to my posts? I have all the appropriate boxes checked. Has Avid changed this feature?
Thanks again for your help.

> removal of PS Lite is a bad idea because of the Ghostscript issue.
It's not a Ghostscript issue: it's a font issue. PhotoScore 8 does not use Ghostscript at all, and the presence or otherwise of Ghostscript makes no difference to PhotoScore 8.
> So the problem is NOT fixed.
This is a different problem. It arises because you have proceeded directly to "read" the page, rather than stopping to check that staves have been recognised correctly before "reading".
In PhotoScore Preferences, tab "Scanning", uncheck "Read pages after scanning/opening". After scanning or opening a PDF, then click "Locate Staves" for each page in turn, and be prepared to assist PhotoScore to locate the stave lines (and staves of the correct number of lines). You will need to check the PhotoScore Reference for details of this process.
The fact that you are having this problem suggests again that either the scan is of poor quality, or that the resolution settings are wrong. You have not told us what resolution was used for the scanning, and this is important (check the PhotoScore Reference for recommendations).
> Again, why am I not getting email notices of responses to my posts?
That feature has not worked for years. Don't bother trying: just check back here from time to time.

I did not want to tear apart my spiral bound classical guitar book to remove the light leaks during the scan. This has never been a problem with PS Lite. I guess PS Ultimate 8 is more sensitive since it recognizes so much more than the Lite version.
As a test, I took a photo of that page in my book. I then cropped the image and printed it as a PDF. PS Ultimate 8 read the resulting PDF without the errors seen before.
Kind of a cumbersome process, but it works.
Thanks again.

UPDATE:
To prevent having to tear apart my spiral bound guitar music book, I get superior read results by taking a photo with my iPhone or iPad of the music page in the book. PS Ultimate allows opening JPG files. This produces far superior read results in Ultimate compared with any of the PDF scans from my guitar book. The process is also much faster than scanning the pages in my guitar music book. A simple crop of the image and opening in Ultimate is all that is required. There is no issue of light leaks or the spiral binding as with PDF scans.
If you ask, "If you already have the music in your book, why bother to scan?" Well, I am 73 years old and my eyes are failing. By importing the music to Sibelius, I can enlarge the music so it is more easily read by these old eyes. I can also annotate the music with various instructions from my teacher.

It strikes me that those particular requirements might be more easily satisfied by an enlarged photocopy and a pencil! But it's always good to sort out your Photoscore technique.
If you are going to be an ass, please stop responding to my posts!!!!!! If you ever decide to be helpful, take a lesson from Robin and stop the smart ass responses!!!!!!
I am a 74 year old, retired Ph. D. in nuclear physics simply trying to learn something about music in my late years of life. I never had any music instruction in my early years.
You sound like a typical far left college professor needing to put students down in order to feed your ego. I hope there is a monitor on this forum who will give you a little lesson in manners.

Perhaps I owe you an apology. Even the most average high school student understands the basics of the physics of optics. Apparently, you do not. Your recommendation for a photo enlargement would result in music that did not fit on a standard 8.5 x 11 page. Sibelius does not work that way. In Document Setup, staff size can be increased which results only in a vertical enlargement with the notes also being enlarged. Systems can then be rearranged so the resulting music is pleasing to the eye--especially old eyes.
We professionals in physics have an axiom that really applies to you:
"It is better to keep your mouth shut and let everyone think you are a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

Indeed, you'd need bigger paper. Or do half a page at a go, in landscape. Or two sheets of A4 taped together. Or maybe just enough enlargement to lose the margins but still fit on A4.
Nuclear physics is all very well, but sometimes you need a hairy-arsed engineer! Cheer up :-)
> You sound like a typical far left college professor needing to put students down in order to feed your ego.
Ok. This is way off topic (and probably inappropriate) but I don't feel like letting that comment pass by unchallenged.
I have no idea what a "typical far left college professor" is like; I doubt there is a "typical" one. But it appears that you consider that phrase to be negative. Not everybody would agree with you. My wife is a (retired) fairly far left college professor and I don't believe she has ever put a student down in her life ... even those that deserved it.
A large ego needing to put people down is not limited to any profession or political leaning. Take a look at the United States White House if you have doubts.

And what's good for the goose ... .
