Dotted Unisons Intermittently display two dots vice one
Posted by cminor7th - 19 Jan 02:04AM (edited 19 Jan 02:07AM)
For some reason, I'm now getting two dots on a double unison vice a single dot... just measures away from each other. It has happened more than one now and I can't find a way to fix this and it just started happening in a lengthy piece (Elgar's Variations). See image. I haven't changed my entry method - I enter the first voice then enter the second voice as always, but now I get wrong notation. Is this a bug? Any suggestions?

I asked this question some years ago, and got a comprehensive answer from the redoubtable Jeremy Hughes. See:

http://www.sibelius.com/cgi-bin/helpcenter/chat/chat.pl?com=thread&start=473885&groupid=3&&guest=1

It's pretty self-explanatory. It seems there's always two dots there, but sometimes they overlay exactly so that it looks like one, depending on if the note is on or in a line or a space.

This also depends on the voices used, and by changing voices and flipping stems you can get a result different from the default.

Anyway, have a look at Jeremy's more detailed explanation, including opinion on whether one or two dots is correct.

However, Jeremy's solution (turning voice 2 into voice 3 and flipping it) makes voice 3 the upper note and voice 1 the lower note, not that this matters visually. If necessary, voices 1 & 3 can be swapped.

Another strange thing is that the voice 2 rests remain and the voice 1 rests disappear below the voice 3 rests. Ah, well. That's life.

While I see how Jeremy's solution is workable, modern convention now seems to lean to a convention of unisons having a single dot whether in a space or on a staff line (Elaine Gould's "Behind Bars" pg 58 is quite clear on this). So why must we be put through the mill each time to get it to look right when the computer software could be doing that work for us? At least give users an option to have it done automatically would help.

Thanks to all for your replies.
