How to customise your own sound library?
Posted by jazzycammy - 12 Jan 11:55PM (edited 13 Jan 12:17AM)
Hi. I've been told you can customise the sounds you hear on playback. I typically write for a big band. I have Sibelius Sounds, Garritan Jazz & Big Band 3 and General Midi available to me. Just say I wanted to take all the horn sounds from Garritan but take the rhythm section sounds from Sibelius Sounds, how do I go about setting this? Also, how do I set this new customized sound map as my default for all future scores? Thanks in advance.

Open your playback configuration 'setup'. This can be found in the 'play' tab. You should see on the far left of the tool ribbon, keyboard and mixer icons. Under that is the word "Setup" with a tiny square icon just to right of that. Click the little setup icon.

That should bring up "Playback Devices".

Here you can mix and match whatever plugins and/or MIDI port devices you want available, and you can also 'rename them' if that helps. From there, in the "Preferred Sounds" tab, you can let Sibelius know which instruments you prefer assigned to specific plugins or MIDI devices.

So, if you need 32 channels of ARIA for Winds and Brass, another 16 Channels on a General MIDI keyboard that has onboard sounds for pianos, and Sibelius sounds for other rhythm section stuff, then add two instances of ARIA directed to JABB3, the midi output going to your keyboard with a GM1 or GM2 soundset, and an instance of Sibelius Sounds. Next, you'd go to the Preferred Sounds tab and assign families or specific instruments via SoundWorld ID as desired.

You can also change your mind later and assign staves to specific plugins or MIDI instruments using the Mixer (ctrl-alt-m) instrument slots.
