My 8.5 is so sluggish
Posted by Adrian Drover - 12 Jan 04:05PM (edited 12 Jan 04:07PM)
I'm working on a score which is by no means big, just 184 measures of 3/4 time for big band (19 staves), size 385 KB. Selecting or deleting an object takes up to a second to respond, and using plug-ins such as 'Exchange staff contents' or 'Add rehearsal double barline' takes up to a massive 8 or 9 seconds to respond with shortcut keys.

Thinking the problem might be other than Sib's doing, I have exported the score to load into my reserve 7.1.3 and everything is working instantly as it should.

Is anyone else having such problems with 8.5?

Most of my issues have been with Avid Application Manager. Try turning it off and restarting.

Too technical for me to dabble with, Mike. I will need help with that. What is an application manager anyway, and where is it? 7.1.3 seemed able to manage itself.

I've had to downgrade the score file that I'm working on from 8.5 back to 7.1.3 in order to finish my project in time. And what a pleasure it is to be working on 7.1.3 again. So free and easy. In comparison 8.5 feels like trying to run a 100 yards dash while towing a ball and chain.

So can someone please tell me if the application manager is affecting the performance of my 8.5, and if so, can 8.5 be run w'out the interference of an application manager, and if so, how do I lose it?

If it were Avid Application Manager making the computer sluggish, then it would have affected 7.1.3 as well. So, I do not think that Avid Application Manager is at fault here.

Ah, OK, thanx, Robin. So I need to find what else might be slowing 8.5 down to snail's pace for editing. I can only think now that it might be content. Has anyone had a problem using performance staff text, ie. "swing"/"straight"? Just a guess, as I've not used it previously.

PS. Nope, forget that. I'm getting the same dreadful slowness with third party scores in 8.5.

Adrian, you mentioned that exporting the score into Sibelius 7 format made it editable non-sluggishly in Sibelius 7.1.3. Have you tried opening the Sibelius 7 format version of the score in 8.5? Then see whether that version is sluggish or not-sluggish in 8.5?

Just tried it, Robin. In 7.1.3, selection of objects and the Exchange staff contents plugin are instant. In 8.5 there is a slight delay in object selection and a massive 6 seconds delay for the same plugin to act.

For obvious reasons, I don't want to make my completed score available for general inspection, but I'm getting the same results with Nikolaj's score in his "Brushes" thread. When I download this into 8.5 I get the same sluggishness as with my own score. When I downgrade either mine or Nikolaj's score to load into 7.0, editing speed is back to normal. This is most noticeable with plugins which take up to 8 seconds to react in my 8.5. So, I don't think the fault is with the score, but some incompatibility with the program itself.
