Sib. 7.1.3: Sib 7.1.3 Addressing final score layout
Posted by amybalcomb - 03 Dec 05:47PM
Many thanks to Chris for assisting with my previous query today.

I now come to the more pressing concerns I now have around sorting out the overall layout of my score.

I have just followed previous advice, selecting the entire score and Unlocking Format. I then selected every page of my score EXCEPT the 1st pages of movements 1 and 2, and Hidden Empty Staves.

This has now understandably reduced the score dramatically which as far as I can see if a great thing! However, it has also shrunk things down and the overall layout has moved staves, etc.

Is there a 'best practice' way forward to getting everything looking uniform and tidy now? I have attached the score for you to take a look at. I'm looking for guidance on what I should do in what order really; if there are any top tips from those far more experienced than I!!

I have also noticed that my second movement doesn't start on a new page; it comes in part way through a page (bar 343 needs to be at the start of a new page) - is it simply a question of putting a page break in at the end of bar 342?

You might need to go through and just check it hasn't messed up the hiding.
Layout->Reset space above and below; Optimize.

Go through and manually check for ugliness in the layout. Add any breaks - either system or page - that you think will improve the overall appearance. Nothing can beat the human eye at this stage.

Check for text going into/outside the page margins. (eg p.16) and adjust the pagination manually.

You might want to mark the end of the first movement with a final barline?

I'm sure other people will have other suggestions.

It's down to juggling and judgement now! Make sure the 'Justify Staves...' setting in Engraving Rules/Staves isn't working against you. Try to arrange page breaks to coincide with changes of orchestration density, but tolerate some empty staves when hiding them would make ugly changes. Hide instruments that are empty for two or three systems, otherwise consider leaving them alone.

If I may - your quirky font can be tolerated for titles and narrative text, but I advise against it for musical text - instrument names and Tempo Text in particular.

Amy, there is a document entitled "Music Preparation Guidelines for Orchestral Music", published by the Major Orchestral Librarians' Association. It contains various recommendations for the layout of scores and parts and is an attempt to draw together the best practice while acknowledging that different publishing houses will have specific requirements.

As such it is an invaluable guide for those of who have not had the benefit of working closely with professional engravers.

You can view or download it here:

Much of the guidance given is fairly generalised and, as Laurence says, many decisions still have to be made by eye; cultivating one's sense of clarity and pleasing design is essential.
