I sometimes have a bug where optimize staff spacing puts a significantly oversized gap between a pair of staves. I'm aware of how cross staff notes can cause that to happen, but it sometimes happens in cases where there are no cross staff notes, and in those cases I have no idea what causes it. I'm curious.

The attached score is one such example. If I make a selection that includes the first system and optimize it, I get a large gap between musical saw I and musical saw II in the first system. No other system in the score has this problem. If I delete the slur from the first two bars of saw II, the problem doesn't occur. If I copy those two bars, complete with slur, and move them from bars 1-2 to bars 2-3 of saw II, or any place in the part other than bars 1-2, the problem also doesn't occur. So it's not just the way that slur interacts with those notes, but also what bar of the score it appears in. One might think that it's something special about first bars of scores, but I have at least one score where it happens somewhere other than the beginning. I also have a score where it happens to a system that contains no slurs. I can post either of those if needed.

I've found that the problem also doesn't occur if I use System Object Positions to make system text appear above saw I only, and not also above the guitar. I believe that in every case where I've gotten this bug, there has been a piece of system text on the system in question. And I think the overlarge gap is always between the top two staves that happen to be displayed for that system.

It's not a bug. There just isn't enough room to put another system on the page using the default settings. You might play around with the page justification percentage.
