Could someone explain to me why a harpist would want to see double flats and double sharps in their part, and why the pedal diagram bears no relation to the notes that follow it?

A fair point, but it's clear that it's a proof-of-concept excerpt intended to display as many features as possible in a short space, not a realistic example of playable music.

> Could someone explain to me why a harpist would want to see double flats and double sharps in their part,

My understanding of the harp is that players double up on some notes enharmonically, playing say, a C# and a Db, on two different strings in order to improve the tone quality, particularly on lower notes. Although I think this can be written into sheet music using two voices on one staff, I suspect some players make these choices individually after analyzing the composition. Books on orchestration that I have read suggest that a composer does not need to worry about specifying these adjustments. Then again, I don't play the harp.

> and why the pedal diagram bears no relation to the notes that follow it?

Why this, I do not know.

It's really useful only if you really need to do it.

On the other hand, there are hundreds of thousands of pages of published music that don't need it, and never will.

It would be "really useful" to get some of the bugs in Sibelius 2 fixed eventually, but then flying pigs would also be really useful to somebody.

Not sure why the attitude here… surely you could say the same thing about any feature. There are hundreds of thousands of pages of published music that don't need alto clef, for instance.

But fine, I will amend my statement to "Changing the staff size on a per-system basis is really useful to me, on occasions where I have needed it, and perhaps others will find it useful too."

Damned if they do, and damned if they don't ("they" being the current Sibelius development team). I've lost count of the number of times variable staff size has been requested on these pages over the years; it has actually been one of the most requested features. And it was never delivered, until now. Well done, team!

Can't say that I'm amazingly impressed. I preferred the colour of the original inspector, and preferred the fact that its window used to size according to contents instead of taking up screen space with blank space.

Very disappointed that this (attached) has not been repaired. Hasn't worked as it should since 7.1.3.

I was hoping for better for my subscription money. When can we expect a version with long standing bugs repaired?

Adrian - we're reviewing all feedback about the new Inspector and will hope to include yours in a forthcoming update. As for the rehearsal marks being copied to the previous bar using alt+click, we have that logged (with your name next to it) but it unfortunately didn't make the 8.5 cut. Two bugs we did have your name next to have been fixed in 8.5, so I hope you now enjoy continuing to enter MIDI input after changing from unpitched to pitched instrument, and seeing key signatures when an instrument changes from an unpitched to pitched instrument.

If you want to see a summary of what else has been fixed up in this version, see "Further improvements in Sibelius 8.5" on my recent blog post.

Sam. Just tried making a multi-perc part. This is the result (attached). Drum set has key sig. Vibes has no key sig. Doesn't play back as vibes (some notes sound like tom toms). I'm supposed to enjoy this?

Regarding rehearsal mark & double barline. You don't need to bother to mend the select-alt-klik function now. Bob Z has come up with a much better solution. And it took him just a few hours to come up with a working solution.

There does seem to be a problem, Adrian, when the change to Drum Set starts a new stave. It's OK when dragged back to the previous line. Not right, I agree.

But the change to Vibes seems OK for me.

I think I must have overwritten the 2nd instrument change with notes, but not perfect, Laurence, as you say. Looks like, once again, a bug fix has resulted in another new bug. Actually, I was asked if I would like to beta test 8.5 to which I answered affirmative, but I guess they forgot to send me the update.

Re: Sibelius 8.5 is here!

Adrian, this is not a new bug, but rather a symptom of the problem described here, which goes way back to when instrument changes were first introduced (Sibelius 5 I think):

http://www.sibeliusblog.com/tutorials/instrument-changes-key-signatures-multirests/

The workaround is to place a special normal barline.

The reason there is no key signature on the third system and it isn't playing back as vibes is because there is no instrument change there back to vibes. Maybe you deleted it? That one's not Sibelius's fault.

I've attached a file with a workaround where the special normal barlines are applied. Additionally I've hidden the instrument changes at the end of the systems and placed text at the beginning of the new system.

I fully agree these things should be more easily dealt with, but at least 8.5 has fixed a couple of those problems.

I can remember making multi-perc parts before instrument changes were introduced into the program. It was very involved. We had to make transposition change, clef change and midi bank and program change, all as separate tasks, but as far as I can remember, it all worked. Philip, I don't think your special barlines make any difference to drums getting a key sig when the change is at the start of a system. And reset note spacing doesn't stop that key sig crashing into the notes. It's a mess that needs to be sorted.

Re: Sibelius 8.5 is here!

When I reset note spacing on my example, the note spacing holds. That's the point of using the special barline in this method. You must place the instrument change at the end of the previous system, hide it, and then re-label it as text at the beginning of the new system.

I'm not saying it's intuitive but it works and holds if you follow the steps. Obviously it should all be made simpler, but for now, if you need to do this, this is the most reliable way that I've found.

FWIW, if you are going to fix it so that changes of instrument are at the end/start of systems, you may as well keep them as two separate staves, create a part with just those staves on it and use 'hide empty staves'.

Just to be clear, it is not necessary to have the instrument change at the start or end of a system. It can be in the middle.

But if page formatting looks better with the instrument change at the start of a new system, it should still work properly. You may need to make a page turn at the instrument change too.
