Sib. 7.5: Drum mapping problem
Posted by Art Resnick - 27 Nov 04:06AM
First of all Hi Everyone. It's been a long time and I'm just getting back up and running after a long illness. Like starting all over.
Anyway, I just spent hours on learning drum mapping. The problem is that I mapped my notes out but when I wanted to enter them into score some of the note types I used (such as open/closed HH) aren't listed in the notations/Type tab. What am I missing???

Tnx,

Glad you're on the mend.

An example score would be helpful so we could see what you have actually done to the drum map.

Are you using self created noteheads? They could be at the bottom of the list out of view. Are you using + & o articulations for your hi-hat notes? Do these match in score and drum map? As Mike says, please post your sib file.

It doesn't have to be a score you're working on, just one that uses the drum map and demonstrates the issue.

I've included the map I'm trying to create. When I first wrote the question all the sounds played in the edit mode correctly even though they didn't in the score. Now they don't play even in the edit mode.

Not using self created noteheads but I was using the + & o for the HH which was in the edit notes. Sib file now postd.

Some of the notes in your score are not mapped or have different note-heads.

There are several problems in the drum map.

But first, if you are hearing completely wrong sounds, such as a click for everything, "reset the mixer" (look it up in the Reference).

Having done that, make sure that the Mixer stays in automatic mode, so that there are parentheses around the player and patch names. Don't make any manual changes to the Mixer player or patch selections: if you have done that in error, they will appear wihout parentheses.

Sibelius will automatically select the patch "Studio Drum Kit", being the patch which has the best match with the SoundIDs you have chosen in the Drum Map. It does not, however, contain ALL the sounds you defined in the Drum Map. Each sound defined in any one Drum Map must be drawn from the sounds available in a single "patch" in the sample library.

Now to the Score and the Drum Map:

- there is no sound in the Studio Drum Kit patch which exactly matches the SoundID for the crossed note on the first leger line, which has SoundID unpitched.metal.cymbal.crash.high. Sibelius will play a substitute for this sound.

- the Drum Map has two different noteheads mapped to "Open Hi-Hat". One you describe as "Open HH", the other you describe as "China": the open diamond above the top staff line.

- the Drum Map has no mapping for the slashed-circle above the top staff line: the one you describe as "Ride".

- the patch "Studio Drum Kit" has no exact match for the SoundID defined for the up-arrow notehead on the first leger line above the staff: Sibelius will play a substitute sound. You describe this as "Bell", but the SoundID defined is unpitched.metal.bells.high.triangle.open.stroke.

- for the "rim-shot" on C5, the notehead in the score does not match the notehead in the Drum Map: the slash is in the opposite direction. So this note will not play.

- for the note you describe as "stack", there is no matching notehead definition in the Drum Map.

I hope that helps.

I am sometimes of the opinion that Robin has far too much time on his hands... ;-)

Well I could find no reference to resetting the mixer Robin. I still get nothing but clicks in the Staff type window.
I don't know if this makes a difference but I mistakenly said I was running 7.5 when actually I still have ver. 7.1x
Is there no way I can even approximate different sounds to accomodate this drummers set?

OK, let's try this again. I completely reset the drum map accordingly and it was fine in the edit mode. The first three notes are closed HH. I don't understand why it doesn't playback since it's part of the 7 soundset (as far as I can tell). All the sounds seem fine in the edit mode.
PULeeze help!

The first 3 drum notes in your score are note-head 24, which is not mapped for that instrument. You need to create a new pitch & note-head style in your drum map to match that in your score. In case you don't know how to do this, select the drum staff, goto Home/Instruments/Edit/EditInstrument/EditStaffType. Select New and klik blue pointer on the staff. Move new note into position (Up/down). Select note-head type (24). Select Choose Sound. Follow the menu to required kit/Metal/HiHatClosed. The notes in your score should now play with that sound. You may have to mess about with the Mixer &/or Playback Properties to get a decent balance.

> Well I could find no reference to resetting the mixer

In the Reference for Sibelius 7.1.3, the procedure for resetting the Mixer is described in the fourth paragraph of page 519:

"As with the device menu, you can reset a staff to choose sounds automatically once more by choosing (Auto) from the menu. You can reset all staves to automatic sound allocation by holding Shift and choosing (Auto) from the menu."

Shift-(Auto) is what you want.

I don't know anything about the mixer because I very rarely have need to open it, but I have added your closed hi hat note to the drum map and it plays fine for me. I've also added snare tremolo to the map so that it sounds as a roll rather than a machine gun (on my Yam XGM anyway). Does Sib Sounds have a patch for snare roll?
