I would like much wider note spacing.

I write classical guitar music. It has notes in at least two voices and sometimes in three or four. There are lots of accidentals. It is fingered! I need room for finger numbers. It also frequently has circled numbers indicating strings. And sometime there are chords with the ripply arpeggiation sign and other markings.

My normal procedure is to first enter the notes. Then I add manual line breaks so that the music spaces wider. Then I nudge things over using shift-option arrow key to make room for fingerings and so on. This works.

But it seems like it would be much better to enter values into Note Spacing Rule, select all, and reset note spacing to get the wider spacing I want in the first place. However, I haven't figured out what values to change so that I get the results I want.

For example, I change "minimum space Around Noteheads" from .13 to .4 and the music looks nearly the same: way too narrow spacing.

So please offer suggestions for how I can set Rules and better wider spacing.

A change from .13 to .4 made little difference. So you tried a considerably bigger change and... ?

Yes, I used a larger number and changed some of the other numbers. It helped but it looks like I'm still going to have to put in manual line breaks to lay things out properly.

Why not set the automatic system breaks to every 3 or maybe 4 bars? That way you may only occasionally have to change the spacing on a system.

I think the 'min space around noteheads' value only kicks in if space gets really tight, and not relevant if you want to expand the spacing.

I think you need to adjust these values instead (see attachment) - try doubling all of them, then do a Reset Note Spacing.

Thank you for that very interesting Sib blog article. I can't use the plugin since I'm on Sib 6.2. But it reassures me that others were interested in this problem. I also got some other ideas from the article.

I don't think I want a fixed empty bar width so I have so far left "Empty bar width determined by time signature" checked. But thanks for the suggestion.

@ Mike Lyons

As long as I have to get wider note spacing by using system breaks and thereby forcing fewer measures per line, I prefer to put in the system breaks manually for musical reasons rather than just have the machine do it every so many bars.

Please have another look at my suggestion because unless I've misunderstood your original post, it may be the solution you're looking for. It's not really about the empty bar width behaviour, I'm talking about adjusting the values for the individual note lengths that appear in the list ('Short notes', '16th notes' etc)

Steven is correct: the values he has circled are the ones that you need to adjust. Steven did not suggest any change to Empty Bar Width.
