Changing parts without editing score
Posted by Musician & Educator - 17 Oct 02:40PM
Hello, I have Sibelius version 8.1.1 and am operating on a Mac. I transcribed a piece of music that has 5 parts. I know how to create parts, and have done so, but when I try to edit just the part to look the way I want it, Sibelius changes my whole score which is not what I want. I would like to be able to edit the parts without the whole score changing. Is there a way to isolate changes for parts only?

The musical content of Parts and score are linked. This is the whole point of Dynamic Parts, and is almost always what is required. Layout of Score and Parts can be independently adjusted.

Please give an example of how this system is frustrating you.

It depends on what you mean by "edit the part". Re-formatting system breaks and page breaks will not affect the full score, but changing the notes and rests will change the full score.

A "Part" is just an alternate view of the same stream of music that is in the full score for that instrument. If you change one, you change the other. Most of the time, that is exactly what is needed, to prevent the Part getting out of sync with the Full Score.

If you need to diverge from that normal requirement, perhaps you had better give us more details of what has driven you to attempt this, as we might be able to advise on better solutions to the underlying need.

By the way, why are you still on 8.1.1? You should have updated by now to 8.4.2.

The only way to make a part independent of the score is to Extract it (Parts/Extract), but best if you can avoid this route.

An example of the system is frustrating me is that the vocal line repeats itself but the underlying guitar part does not. So in the vocal part I would like to delete 8 bars of repeat and put a repeat sign instead, so that the part is cleaner and takes up less space, but if I do that then in the score my guitar variation for the next 8 bars gets deleted.

I am not on 8.4.2 because I haven't had time to update yet.

Then, the only route is extraction, but any editing done in the score from that point will no longer show in the part.

Oh, you'll love it. Lots of new, and un-repaired bugs.

So, that's sarcasm, then, correct? Would you suggest not updating?

This is one of the rare occasions when an Extracted Part is the answer.

Ok great, I'll try extracting the part. Thanks!

I'm waiting to see what 8.5 has to offer. I have bugs in 8.3 that I didn't have in 7.1.3, and know are still in 8.4. Yes, it was sarcasm, frustrated sarcasm.

It may say you time in rehearsal if you fix the bar numbers in the shorter part to match...

Maybe after outsourcing Sibelius development to Kiev, Avid are learning the truth behind some old Russian jokes, like

"Maybe 8.4 will turn out to be an average quality version. Better than 8.5, but worse than 8.3" ...
