Hi all,

I use Libre word processing software ans was wondering how one takes musical examples form one's own pieces on Sibelius and integrates them with text (I,m writing an article about a piece of mine)

Any help much appreciated.

You would need to export from Sibelius in a vector-based graphics format (such as PDF or SVG, or old-school EPS), and then import that into your word-processor as a graphic.

Regarding quality the best vector graphics format for LibreOffice is SVG. But the SVG snippets that come from a graphic selection exported from Sibelius are not cropped correctly. You get the whole page and the hidden stuff is only masked by white boxes.

Have a look at my free solution called LibreOffice Songbook Architect that you can find in the signature.

Now that I managed to install Sibelius 8 for testing I found out that the SVG structure has changed from Sib 7 to Sib 8.

LOSA (see signature) is now updated to cope as well with Sib 8 graphic selection export SVG snippets.

Still wondering why Sibelius creates this kind of SVGs where unneeded parts are hidden behind white boxes instead of adjusting the SVG "Viewbox" directly.

Found out that SVGs exported from Sibelius don't support the following enhanced text features:
X-Value
Y-Value
Tracking
Underline

The PDF-export works correctly.

Avid could fix this in a future update, please.


So if your score makes use of those features and you want to use snippets in LibreOffice you can convert the PDF to SVG with Inkscape and import that SVG into LibreOffice.

For ease of use LOSA automatically converts PDFs into SVGs (if Inkscape is installed) before importing when you press the "ill(ustration)"-button.
