Not all instruments playback in large ensemble setup
Posted by EGonzalez654 - 22 Sep 03:13AM (edited 22 Sep 03:51AM)
When playing back, the bottom four staves (vibraphone, piano (A) and (B), and double bass) aren't sounding. That being said, all 3 of those instruments are metering in the mix window.

The only thing I had done since I had last listened and heard every instrument playing back was add a couple instruments to the score. And up until now, I have never had issues running Sibelius and playing back large ensemble scores with Sibelius Sounds 7.5.

I have uninstalled Sibelius and reinstalled it, reinstalled Sibelius Sounds 7.5, and I have even wiped my hard drive, reinstalled mac os, and then installed Sibelius and Sibelius Sounds 7.5 a second time.

Still the bottom staves are not playing back.

In Preferences -> Playback, I have the maximum number of channels set to 128 and I have Sibelius 7 set as the playback device.

Any ideas?

---

I'm using a MBP running El Capitan (10.11.6).

I believe there are issues on Macs with el crapitan. Also, this kind of issue also depends on how many different articulations and techniques you are using in each instrument and how much RAM you have on your Mac.

Have you installed the Bass Clarinet patch? That is also associated with missing sounds.

What version of Sibelius is this happening on?

If (a) Sibelius is version 7.5 or higher, and (b) there is a Bass Clarinet in the score, then you MUST install the Bass Clarinet patch for the Sibelius Sounds sample library, unless you have already done so.

Also, it is a known problem with Sibelius 7 onwards that Sibelius on Mac cannot play scores with very many staves: it is always the bottom staves that fall silent. The score normally plays fine under Sibelius for Windows.

You might be able to mitigate your problem by choosing Playback Configuration "Sibelius 7 Sounds (Lite)" rather than "Sibelius 7 Sounds".

RE: Mike

I have 16GB of RAM and just upgraded to mac os Sierra. Where would I find this bass clarinet patch?

RE: Robin

I'm using Sibelius 8.4.2 build 231. Could you point me towards this bass clarinet patch?

I've found that with the current number of staves, using Sibelius 7 Sounds (Lite) will let them all playback, and if I remove the two staves that I had added before it stopped working (Piccolo and Clarinet in Eb) I can then change it to Sibelius 7 Sounds and get playback in all instruments.

I guess it's just slightly disappointing that I can't use Sibelius 7 Sounds and have to use the Lite version, though I guess there shouldn't be too much of a difference? I'm not sure.

Thank you Robin, I installed that patch and Sibelius 7 Sounds still won't play back the lower staves (and certain notes on some percussion staves?).

It looks like I will just be sticking with Sibelius 7 Sounds (Lite).

I would not expect the Bass Clarinet patch to help unless there is a Bass Clarinet in the score.

The situation you are describing is typical of Sibelius 7 and 8 on Mac OS, trying to play a score with many staves.

Yeah, there is a bass clarinet.

Thank you for your help either way! I appreciate it!

Are you using lots of different articulations and/or techniques? This can eat up your available voices very quickly. It isn't as big an issue on PC as it appears to be on Mac.

It might be worth investing in something like Note Performer from Wallander instruments. It's cheap - relatively - and generally does a good job. Unlike Sib 7 sounds, it isn't limited to one instance of the player and might, therefore, help to avoid the issue.
