Recovering corrupted files
Posted by Toma - 13 Sep 06:53PM

Hello,

I have purchased Sibelius-8 about 3 months ago and use it constantly. Today I failed to open some of my files.
When I try to open them, a notification appears:
"There was an error opening the score "___"...
This file seems to be corrupted. Look in the Backup folders for recent version of the files you have saved"

The problem is, that I didn't make a backup versions for my biggest file - this is the only version I have and I don't want to lose it. I always save the file with the same name. I remember saving it closing it properly.

What can I do to recover this file?

Thanks ahead,

Tamara

As the message says, look in the "Backup" folder inside "Scores" to see whether there are any earlier versions of the file that will not open. Sibelius automatically saves into "Backup" a duplicate copy of every score file that you Save in Sibelius.

However, if this message is occurring for multiple files, rather than just one corrupt file, then you might have more than one version of Sibelius on the computer, and the wrong version of Sibelius is opening when you double-click a Sibelius file in the operating system.

Is this on Mac OS or on Windows?

Dear Mr. Walker,

Thank you very much for your quick reply.

This is Windows.
But now it is O.K. - I found this "Backup" folder with many backups of all my files! I was not sure about this folder and didn't know where it is situated on my disk but assumed that such a professional program as Sibelius must resolve problems like this.

Thanks to this problem I learned 3 things: that such a folder exists, that I should backup all my files no matter what and to enter the forum where I can find help.

Thank you very much for your help.
Tamara

Unfortunately the success rate for recovery of corrupted Sibelius is approximately nil. Where this isn't down to confusion between corruption and "wrong version", it often seems to be about storing sib files on removable media and not ejecting it properly.

So Save often, backup often. And, though you were lucky this time, don't rely too much on the Auto-backup feature. It probably doesn't do QUITE what you think it does!

No, my files were corrupted - there was a notification when I tried to open them. I think it happened because of sudden power outage one day before.
Backup folder saved me one month work.

There are a lot of free cloud storage sites. It's worth using one of them.

This started happening to me yesterday. After a quick forum search I thought it could have been due to a long file name. I have since shortened the file name which seemed to work, but now I am getting the same error message as above. At first it was just on the file I am currently working on, but it also seems to be happening to other random files too.

The odd thing is that I sometimes first get an error message while trying to save. Something along the lines of 'File "___" is not available for writing.' So then I have to close Sibelius, unable to save the file. On reopening I get the corrupted message.

This is quite a large score, but it's an incredibly frustrating issue. I hoped it would fix itself when I updated to macOS Sierra this morning, but apparently not. Luckily my backup files work.

I am on the newest version of Sibelius, Application Manager and macOS. All of my scores are saved on my internal SSD.

As well as keeping within the system limit for a filepath (which can, of course, increase when a file is moved to a folder further down the tree) it's always a good idea to restrict yourself to "legal" characters in file names. Even if it does preclude some ingenious method of cataloguing your scores and versions.
