Sib. 7.5: Lengthen note duration
Posted by eboats - 26 Aug 03:40AM
I'd like to go back and lengthen a note's duration, and have the notes to the right of it shift to the right. When I try this, it deletes a note. I could cut/paste the notes to the right but that is awkward. Is there a better way of doing this?

Also, what if I want to insert a rest after a note and have the notes to the right shift to the right? Thanks for any info.

This is possible in the latest versions of Sib. In your current version you will need to cut and paste all of your notes to their new position.

Thanks for the info! What version of Sibelius implemented this feature and how does it work in the new version? Hard to believe it took this long to support such a simple/common task.

It's a feature that some people like to sneer at - after all, what sort of musician doesn't know what beat he wants a note on? - but I find it more useful than I anticipated. Mainly when a rapidly-entered string of notes get displaced due to having pushed the wrong note-value key on the numeric keypad.

See this thread. It arrived in Sibelius 8.2, was improved somewhat in 8.3.

Thanks! Yes, sometimes I like to sketch something up quickly and just want to hear it without worrying about whether it's perfectly organized, so want a more fluid approach to changing note durations.

I recall there is a Sketch page in Sibelius 7.5 but not sure if it'd help me with this.

I think Finale supports this in older versions too. Bring on Dorico!

Oh, this "sliding" notes feature looks like it moves notes, but can you also use it to change note durations, and have the notes to the right shift? I believe Finale will "Re-Bar" the music when you do this.

No. You have to decide how much more space you need then slide subsequent notes along that amount. It isn't a true "ripple edit".

Still wondering if there was a definitive answer to this? It looks like there's a key command in Dorico that features this (see pic). But I can't seem to find it in Sibelius (neither in keyboard shortcuts or plugins). Can someone point me to the plugin or the menu item used?

Also consider, the "double" or "halve" note transformations in the "note input" tab isn't it. Moreover, this creates another score that you then have to copy and paste back into the original (I don't know why it was designed this way). And you have to select a full passage... I just want to extend/decrease the duration of a single note!

You cannot do that in one move.
To extend a note, you first need to make room for the extension, by moving all subsequent notes to the right by the correct amount.
If you decrease the duration of a note, you will be left with a rest after it.

In ancient times, Encore, one of the first notation programs I used, could that that. It was fluid about the size of a bar, and I often entered passages as all 8th notes, just to get the pitches in, then I want back and set durations. I really like it.

The side effect was there was no check that the right number of beats were in the bar, and as a composer I had a few cases of bringing a score to a rehearsal and having the wrong number . Both embarrassing and time waiting as I scurried to figure out what should be in the bar.

I got used to the way Sib does it and least to make space by deleting the notes I wanted to shift and alt-clicking them to another duration.

It is easier now, both with sliding notes and even more so with "note erosion", where increasing the size of a note on takes out the duration it needs from following notes. Thus turning pairs of 8ths into dotted 8th-16th pairs is now trivial.

But I do sometimes miss that fluidity.
