Sorry for the delay in replying (I was away) and thanks for the pointers. However - the issue I'm referring to is - the search options in Sibelius help have no 'intelligence' at all as typically found on a web browser, for example.
For example - if you type typical phrases such as "insert notes" or "insert harp glissando", all it is doing is searching for words, not phases.
It means that you cannot use Sibelius' search facilities for instruction on typical tasks that a novice like me will need to do. So you've no way of finding out how to do typical things from the manual.
Furthermore, genuinely and not just griping here - a plethora of typical things you'd need to do on a score are just not in the manual - it is genuinely incredibly devoid of instructions on how to do things in Sibelius and only gives basic instructions and very, VERY, isolated definitions.
For example - I have just posted to this forum a question on how to insert Harp Up-Down glissando. There is absolutely no instruction on this in the manual. I have encountered this on literally dozens of occasions when trying to learn the application.
I genuinely think there is a need for a major overhaul of the manual and online help - where AVID / Sibelius could look over this forum, and separately list the top several hundred typical things done on scores over and over again, and offer instruction on them.
In every single instance where I've had to insert anything on a score beyond notes and rests, trawling through the manual invariably leads nowhere, and I have to either Google it or visit this forum. Even tasks such as changing a title, adding new bars, changing time signatures are incredibly cryptic to novices and often hard to find in the manual - and while I fully accept that there's a learning curve in getting to know all applications; I believe Sibelius is particularly bad in all these regards. I'm personally very experienced in both computing and music (but not Sibelius) but genuinely believe Sibelius is poor in this regard; and hope that anyone in Sibelius reading this will take this view point on board.
I don't believe I'm alone in this regard - I sense a reasonable level of frustration on this forum, on the Facebook Sibelius Group I'm a member of, and on Google searchers, with many people finding the Sibelius Manual excellent in some regards, but really very poor on instruction of many ways of using Sibelius that should, in my opinion, be better explained.
I am genuinely not trolling, and am just expressing these thoughts as a person with genuine, repeated frustration - and I do use and read manuals and try many things myself before I ever post to a forum.
I have to say finally - I do find this forum to be fantastic - both regarding other users and indeed Sibelius staff who offer guidance, and am grateful for all help given.
Thanks,
Kevin. |
