Sib. 7.5: Straight & Swing
Posted by zinatree - 04 Aug 06:07PM
I am writing a score that alternates straight and swing sections. If I go to Play>Performance>Rhythmic Feel and choose one of the Swing settings, the score plays in swing rhythm, of course. If I then use Tempo text to write 'Straight' at a particular place in the score, the score plays in straight rhythm from that point on. However, if I want to return to swing rhythm at a later point, writing 'Swing' in Tempo text has no effect, and the score continues to play in straight rhythm. Similarly, if I go to Play>Performance>Rhythmic Feel and choose the Straight setting, writing 'Swing' in the score has no effect, and the music continues to play in straight rhythm. I am puzzled, because I wrote another score a couple of years ago in which both 'Swing' and 'Straight' appear, and Sibelius obeys both words with no problem. I do not understand why that score works, and the current one does not. Any insights?

Please attach a Sibelius .sib score file which demonstrates this issue for you. There must be something wrong in the score.

This is a known issue that arose in Sibelius 7.5 with scores made in earlier versions (or using Manuscript Papers created in earlier versions.

See my attached screenshots. The Playback parameters are set for "Swing" as Staff Text but not as System Text.

You can edit the latter manually to match the Staff Text settings. Or, for a quick fix, Import one of the standard House Styles.

Hi Laurence,

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I have taken two days to get back. I tried adjusting the numbers as you had indicated on your screenshot, but the score still plays back in straight rhythm when it reaches the 'Swing' marking. Perhaps I failed to do exactly what you suggested (I changed the numbers so as to adjust the System Text settings to match the Staff Text settings), but if I did (it seemed pretty simple) it did not work. Please correct me if I did go wrong, but if I did do what you said and it did not work, do you have any other ideas regarding how to fix this problem? Thanks!

David

Hi Laurence,

Thanks for reminding me about your second suggestion. (Sorry, again, that this time it is three days since you last posted - I am away from home - on a kind of vacation - and concentrating on other things.)

I did try Suggestion #2, and it worked. Thank you! It is, however, as you said, a quick fix. Since I use my own adapted house styles for every score I write, I do not see it as a practical solution to this problem to use one of the provided house styles. That does lead to another question, however. What is the difference, in terms of why one solution works and the other does not, between my own adapted house style and the InkPen 2 house style I imported? In other words, if I returned all of the settings of the score as it now stands (with the InkPen 2 house style already imported) to those of my own adapted house style (those that were already in the score before I did the import), at what point would the score stop working, as far as the Straight and Swing aspects are concerned? Which particular setting makes the difference, if there is a single setting responsible? And if there is one, could I not simply keep my own house style and change that one setting? Does this make sense? And do you know which setting, if so, makes the difference?

Feel free not to answer this added question. You have already helped me, for which I am grateful. It is just that I do not understand why one house style works and one does not. Thanks again!

David

Please attach a score in which you have corrected the Playback Dictionary settings for "swing" with no success.

According to previous information about this issue, the problem you report was fixed in version 7.5.1.

zinatree, have you updated to Sibelius 7.5.1? If not, why not?

Yes, I can confirm that the system "Swing" text is being ignored at measure 35, even tho' it is set to 157+99 in the playback dictionary. Have I now stumbled on upgrade bug #4?

There's another step to the Dictionary fix which has not been carried out:

In "Playback Dictionary" -> "System Text" -> Swing, change "Effect" to something other than "Rhythmic Feel" (e.g. "Tempo"), and then change it back to "Rhythmic Feel", then click OK.

As for the score, you might also wish, in "Performance", to select "Straight" rather than a legacy swing mode.

Hi, Adrian & Robin,

Speaking of bugs, Adrian, I have two more. First, When entering music from a piano keyboard, the metronome mark changes while entering the notes 'live'. If, for example, I set a tempo of quarter equals 70, by the time I am done the tempo will have slowed to quarter equals 65. Second, when playing back a score with a few parts, one part part will experience a drop in volume. Stopping and starting the playback by hitting the space bar twice will restore the sound level to where it should be, but it drops again after a while, to the point where one can barely hear it. (In one score, the level always dropped at measure 32.) Have these two already been discovered by others?

Robin, that last piece of the puzzle fixed the problem! Why it worked, I do not know, but it did, and I can now employ that simple action on future occasions. Thank you!

Thank you to all who helped to answer this question. Please feel free to add any last thoughts. I would be interested to hear anything and everything in the way of follow-up!

Have you turned off the tempo following function of flexitime? There is an icon that is supposed to look like a conductor on the transport panel. This needs to be off!

In Play/Interpretation/Performance, I always leave RhythmicFeel set to Straight, and use System text to specify "Swing" when I need it. The latter should always override whatever is set in Performance.

Mike,

Yikes 2!! I learned about the conductor on the transport panel years ago, and I have never had it on since. So that cannot be causing the problem. Any other thoughts?

The only thing I can add is that, if you have turned everything off that we have suggested, you need to play very mechanically. I'm a rubbish keyboard player and I do play very mechanically, as close to the metronome as I physically can. This seems to work for me most of the time - not that I do much of it these days. What with all the correcting I have to do afterwards, I can put stuff in more quickly by typing.

Does anyone have the swing issues not working using the "RealScore" music and text font library?
