A free and easy way to do this would be to grab sforzando player and then build an sfz file to play your samples.
The nice thing about sfz, is that it's all text based. You can build an sfz file using your own samples in many different formats like wav, aif, mp3, flac, etc.
Sforzando is quite similar to ARIA player. Differences being: 1. You don't need to buy Garritan libraries or Finale to get your hands on it. 2. Only supports a single instrument per instance. 3. No included 'effect processors'. 4. An advantage over ARIA is that you can pull up the sfz file from inside sforzando, make edits to it, save them, and sforzando will instantly play back your changes.
See the thread Rob mentioned above for more information on how to make an sfz file.
To get this working in Sibelius, you'd simply make sure the proper version of the plugin is in your Sibelius VST (Or AU if you're using AU plugins) plugin directory. From there, you can pull instances of the player into Sibelius, and trigger the sounds.
If for some reason you need to get fancy and build complex instruments with many articulations, or you need 'drum maps' then you'll probably want to download the Sibelius 'sound world' editor kit. This allows you to build custom sound sets for any instrument(s) you like inside Sibelius, and it helps establish whatever sound world rules you want Sibelius to use with your instrument(s) when interpreting a score for playback. Sound world IDs can be accessed via the playback Dictionary.
Once you see how sound world works with xml formatted text files, you can continue using that editor, or move to your own preferred xml editor to more easily navigate and edit the contents of an XML sound world sound set. I personally like XMLPad 3, as it makes it easy to compare and contrast different sets at once, easily change the order of things, and even copy and paste among different sound-sets in large batches.
There are some other free sampler/players out there as well...here are just two that I've tried on a PC over the years and they're pretty good stuff for free :)

If you want something smaller, or more MPC like have a look at:

Personally I use Halion 5 and Groove Agent with Sibelius to pull in my custom rolled sounds, and they do rather well. If you want to go with professional/commercial options, there are plenty out there. Web search for things like Halion, Kontakt, Mach 5, Omnisphere, Groove Agent, Battery, Poise, and the list goes on.... |
